Lidia Baxter launch marks Bath yard milestone
At noon the four masted schooner Lydia McL Baxter will slip from the G G Deering yard Bath in midstream, a nearly ready ship not yet rigged. Captain C L Hemphill of Camden will command the vessel built for phosphate trade with Hyde Windlass and oak mahogany furnishings.

Bath Fire History Highlights Kennebeck and Long Reach 2 Steamers
A Bath photograph shows Kennebec Engine Company 3 in front of Shepard Street engine house. Steamers Kennebeck and Long Reach 2, bought in 1875 under Chief Engineer Duncan, remain in reserve. Earlier City of Bath 1 was retired after long service. In 1873 two double pump steamers replaced hand tubs, cost about 4500 each, with total department expenses that year at 15 500.93. The department cut manpower from about 300 to 80 when steamers began operation, with pay rising from 15 to 20 dollars per year. Steamers served until 1887 when water mains reduced need, and both engines kept in reserve for emergencies and outside districts, earning strong competition records in state trials.
