Window in Tomb Left at Request of William Lee

The piece of Lee’s Island near Phippsburg has a storied past with shipbuilding ties and a family tomb on the east side. Descendants recount a window in the tomb’s east wall that faced the river to watch vessels pass, a legend preserved in deeds dating back to 1776. The island, once valued at up to $5,000 and linked to Morse fishing privileges, changed hands through five owners, with Annie E. Doughty of Noank the current holder. The colonial house on the hill was burned after Henry Wyman owned the island, leaving only the hay barn remaining.
