Phippsburg Topics and Sea Events Highlight Weekend
Hurling rain and a coastal hurricane tag end stirred Phippsburg Sunday night as Salt Spray Camp won a tight dory race from Merritt’s wharf to Burnt Coat Island buoy. A masquerade at Estates drew about forty five couples with notable outfits and prizes, while a tennis scramble wrapped Tuesday. The George S. Smith schooner launched at Kennebec, christened by Esther Smith, as crowds gathered at the yard and along the river for the maiden voyage and related festivities.

The schooner George S Smith was launched from Bowker yard in Phippsburg Center at 11 09 am Tuesday amid a large Boston and regional guest list. Guests included George D Rogers C F Webb and their wives and numerous Boston figures linked to the Smith venture. The ceremony featured Miss Hester Smith christening the vessel with champagne and a foggy morning clearing to ideal mid summer weather. Continued on Page Twelve.
