Four Bath boys entering the Fall class of the Maine Maritime Academy at Castine were honored at a farewell party hosted by Joseph Darling and family. About fifty friends attended at 39 Cherry Street as the group prepared for enrollment on August 20 and 21, bringing total academy enrollment to 191.

Maine waterfowl shooters voted to recommend a 70 day open season on ducks and geese starting Oct. 5. The recommendation, endorsed by the Maine Waterfowl Council, awaits USFWS approval. Bag limits remain four ducks daily eight in possession and two geese daily four in possession with species limits unchanged.

Escapes Injury When Hit By Train At Wiscasset
A Wiscasset man Allen Gagnon twenty was driving home from work when his car was struck at the Birch Point Crossing by a Maine Central Railroad locomotive. He escaped with a headache and a slight arm scratch. Deputy Sheriff Robert MacLaren reported the incident occurred Tuesday afternoon on a hill leading down to the track.

Seventy Girls Take Part In YMCA Swimming Program
Seventy Bath girls joined the YMCA Learn to Swim campaign at Reid State Park under Frank Torrey. The program, expanded from 25 to 70 participants, runs weekday afternoons with 14 assistants, testing Minnow club skills and a 50 foot swim forthcoming.

Safety Conference At BNAS Thursday

Plans for New Bridge Approach to Carlton Bridge
State Highway Commission engineers are drafting a high level approach to the Carlton bridge to relieve congestion and remove dangerous rail crossings. The 2000 foot project starts west of the High street overpass, crosses over Middle Franklin and Washington streets and the Maine Central Railroad, then joins the Bath entrance at grade.

Woman Involved in Richardson and West Collision
Mrs. Clara Smart, 76, of Richardson street, was hospitalized after a two car crash at Richardson and West streets near 1 pm Tuesday. Shirley E. Smart and three year old twin granddaughters Janice and Judith Smart also were taken to Memorial hospital but to be released this afternoon. Ruth Freeman, 30 Lincoln street, who operated the second car, was driving south on West street when the collision occurred. Police are investigating.

Mass Handtubs Win New England Muster In Bath
Twenty one old time handtubs from New England competed in Bath for the New England Veteran Fireman's League muster. Top prize went to Okos Marblehead first and Gerry Marbehead second, each earning 250 dollars. Bath's Kennebec took second in class two for 125 dollars, with a parade prize of 125. The event featured a grand parade through Bath led by Harry Warner, with local and regional units plus the Torrent company and Barrys crew. Ailing organizer McCabe collapsed during the event. two men were injured, treated at Memorial Hospital.

Frank B. Nichols Maine’s veteran newspaperman and publisher of the Bath Daily Times the Bath Independent and the Brunswick Record was honored by the Bath Rotary Club. Introduced by his son in law Paul K. Niven editor of the Brunswick Record Nichols was praised as a top ro tarian and a dean of U. S. newspapermen. he began in 1895 in Bath and bought the Times in 1897. He founded the Brunswick Record in 1902 and remained active in publishing and civic work as a charter Bath Rotary member with long service to the city.
