Bath residents donate furniture money and goods to the Lions club recreation hall for soldiers at Popham. Generous support includes a $60 gift from Leading Men's club at Iron Works and many named items. Plans call for an Army truck to collect remaining contributions next Wednesday.

Navy crew praised for aiding city fire response
City officials credited naval shore patrol and Bath Iron Works sailors with rapid help during a Saturday fire. Patrolman Powers said they might have struggled without the on scene assistance as traffic and crowds formed. Navy personnel assisted perimeters, aided first aid to Leigh Fountain, and supported firefighting operations under Ensign Wood and Chief Walker. Mrs. Bridges and Marion Bridges visited their mother during vacation at Popham Beach.

Two Alarm Fire Destroys Bath Center Street Block
Early Saturday a two alarm blaze gutted Leigh Toutain’s cigar store and swept through three apartments above, then spread to the adjoining block. Firefighters from Bath contained the flames after nine hose lines, with the Howard block and Opera House walls aiding containment. No fatalities, one injured, several residents escaped. Ham's Cigar Store now operates temporarily in a different space.

Infant daughter of Bath pastor killed in boating accident
Carol Sue Putnam, 1 1/2, daughter of Rev. Raymond G. and Ruth M. Putnam of Bath, was killed instantly when the dory they rowed from Ocean Point to Fisherman’s Island was struck amidships by a fishing boat near Boothbay Harbor. The parents survived. the child died at Boothbay hospital after two hours of attempted resuscitation. Carol Sue, born January 17, 1941 in Bath, is survived by her parents and maternal/paternal grandparents.

First Union Shop Agreement Signed at Bath
The Bath Iron Works Corp. and the Independent Brotherhood of Shipyard Workers signed Bath's first union shop contract. It covers about 8,600 employees at Bath and Hardings, sets 30 day union membership, adds vacation scales, and details classifications and dues deductions. The agreement runs Aug. 15, 1942 to June 23, 1943, with automatic yearly renewal unless terminated.

Cohen Saw Japs Make the Attack on Hickam Field
Pilot Edward B. Cohen of the U S Army, stationed at Albuquerque, arrived in Bath on a 15 day furlough to visit his parents, Morris H. and Morris M. Petlock, after serving as an aerial engineer at Hickam Field during the December 7 attack. He left New Mexico for New York by plane and is on leave from Camp Lee, Virginia, with his first trip home since enlisting over two years ago.
