Bowdoinham Name Tied to Early Land Purchaser and Pioneers
Bowdoinham derives its name from Dr. Peter Bowdoin, an exile from France after the Edict of Nantes revocation who settled in Boston and later bought land stretching from the Kennebec River to Lewiston Falls. The article covers early settlement, mills, churches, schooling, ships built around 1768, harsh winters, population voting rules, and a major fire in 1902. It notes early doctors, plastered houses appearing around 1880, and a monument committee that oversaw a cannon installation at Rideout Lot in 1910.
