A Bath merchants group met to discuss a September Festival of Bargains aimed at showcasing Bath values and attracting shoppers from Bath and nearby towns. The plan calls for a Chamber of Commerce meeting next Monday to finalize dates and publicity, stressing competitive prices over a Dollar Day format and benefiting local merchants and residents as schools reopen and fall approaches.
Maine relies on two efficient business promotion groups the Maine Development Commission and the Maine Publicity Bureau. Led by Harold N. Schnurle and Guy P. Butler respectively these bureaus market Maine as a live work and play destination attracting visitors and potential residents.
George Davis and Willard Monty of Bath pleaded guilty in municipal court to defrauding the Employment Security Commission while employed. Judge Gardiner R. Deering fined both $60 with costs and ordered 45 days in Augusta jail if unpaid. Davis owes $30 to the State plus $5.60 costs. Monty $21 plus $5.60 costs, with supervised probation by William A. Harris.
Mrs. John Perkins of Harding s has returned from an eight day motor trip through Canada with her brother O R Heinrich of Arlington Mass They were overtaken by torrential rains on the Gaspe peninsula where narrow roads and falling rocks made driving tense The trip offered spectacular scenery and left Perkins with lasting memories She is master of Dro more grange active in Pomona grange Past Masters Association and Lecturers Council of Sagadahoc county.
The Secretary of State addressed Rotarians and closed with an extract from the poem Rugged State of Maine by Col Lester M Hart. Rev Joseph O Purdue and daughter Miss Alice Lorraine of South Dartmouth Mass and former Bath residents vacation at Popham Beach occupying Allan Spear cottage. They were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs J Edward Drake of Washington Street. Purdue preached at The Copper recreation hall Sebasco Estates to Sebasco Lodge guests and Street family.
Cpl. Frank A. Merrill arrives home after a year in Korea and prepares for reassignment at Fort Devens. Others from Bath and nearby towns, including M/Sgt. Alfred Green and Cpl. Arthur Hatch, take 30 day furloughs. Navy, Army, and Air Force personnel relocate through Seattle ports and bases in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Texas, with multiple Maine servicemen cited among transfers and rotations. Cadet Harold M. Sewall earns a Second Lieutenant commission after ROTC summer camp. Pfc. John L. Whitmer departs for Keesler AFB after leave with his mother.
The son of a former U S ambassador to England was killed in action with the Navy during World War II. The vessel is among more than 350 of its type commissioned by the Navy.
Alfred L. Atkins Jr a boiler man third class in the U S Navy and husband of Mrs Rose M Atkins of Foreside road Topsham serves aboard the destroyer Joseph P Kennedy Jr in the Atlantic Fleet destroyer force Atkins entered naval service in December 1942 aboard the ship named for the late president or so it reads in a local service notice naming Atkins as part of the naval roster.
David L. Hill, a Morse High junior from North Bath, returned by Coast Guard cutter from a month in Argentia Newfoundland with his mother Mrs. Richard E. Nevins. Nevins is attached to the U S naval base at Argentia. Hill observed rustic living and agricultural methods that would have been common in this country a century ago. Salmon and trout thrive around Argentia.
Sgt. Kenneth R. Judkins at Bath recruiting station announced that men aged 18 to 26 may enlist in the U S Army for two years. High school graduates can apply for specific Army schooling and be admitted before enlisting, with the chance to attend the school of their choice. Capt Chandler U S A F pilot and navigator will interview college men at the post office next Monday from 8 am to 4 pm.
The Hyde Windlass Co Recreation Association sponsored its annual baseball trip to Boston for 30 employees to see the Boston Red Sox play the Washington Senators in a double-header. Committee members included Edwin F. Ramsay president Burnham Pratt William Bailey and Frank Knight.
Mrs Edna Johnson of Court street passed Friday in Portland while she was called there on business. The notice records her death and location of the event without additional details.
The Twin Bees club of Bath and Brunswick spent an all day picnic outing at Bailey Island replacing the usual August meeting. Members traveled by bus from Bath to Brunswick to Bailey Island where shore dinners were served and social time followed at the Gilman Summer home. The September 13 gathering will be at Mrs. Sarah Potter’s Summer home in Arrowsic with a card and photo display from Lt. Gertrude Pratt in Japan.
John C Hart Jr the 15 year old son of Mr and Mrs Hart of Bath is the only Bath boy commissioned a second lieutenant in Maine s Junior Civil Air Patrol. He trained at Grenier Air Force Base Manchester NH with 200 Maine youths and now works on radio with the Brunswick squadron highlighting opportunities for Bath youths ages 15 to 17 in the patrol.
The Helping Hand club met Thursday evening at 1020 High Street with many attendees. They celebrated Mrs. Sylvia Langlais birthday with gifts and a decorated cake served by host Mrs. Langlais while photos were taken by Mrs. Oliver Foster. The next meeting will be in two weeks at Mrs. Oliver's home 210 Middle Street with a list of members present.
Sunday afternoon racing on the New Meadows venue featured light variable winds with 3:03 start for first class boats. Archibald Main’s Buccaneer won at 4.51.5, followed by Pintardo and Lana, while class two saw Beetle take top honors at 4.18 with Blue Streak and Bath Salt close behind. A hat dance at the Rich's Mountain clubhouse preceded prizes for best hats won by local couples.
Knights of Columbus will escort the Our Lady of Fatima statue visiting Bath Thursday at 7 p.m. Brundwick watchers meet at 6 30 p.m. Services at St Marys Catholic church include Rosary sermon and benediction with Msgr McGrath. A Living Rosary will be held in Lewiston Sept 7 during Fatima statue visit. Lawn party planned Aug 23 24 and 25. Paper drive chaired by Michael Smith progresses.
Clifford Dorr of Dresden Mills pleaded not guilty in Municipal Court before Judge Gardiner R. Deering after being accused of driving under the influence on Main Street Richmond. Deputy Sheriff Clifford Gray and Joseph Pridham testified. Judge Deering found him not guilty due to reasonable doubt.
Hiram C Stevens and Billy Voorhees guided a cruiser down the Kennebec river Saturday evening as heavy fog rolled in. The duo narrowly avoided a collision with a bridge when Voorhees spotted lights through the fog.
Mrs. Viola Melzard Mrs. Mary Ingham Mrs. Sadie Garcelon and Mrs. Susie Darrah were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Pinkham at their cottage at Brigham's Cove. A shore dinner was served at noon. The party was joined by Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Fitzgerald and their sons Brue and Keith of West Bath for the afternoon.
James Footer, son of Mr and Mrs Edward Footer of 1325 High Street, has returned home after spending two weeks at Camp Gregory in Dry Mills.

Fessenden Wincapaw a native of Friendship celebrated his 91st birthday Friday at the home of his granddaughter Mrs Wendell Snowdeal of 74 Denny road with whom he and his daughter Mrs Lillian Burns are living. Friends from Friendship and Bath visited him and he received cards gifts and flowers. He served cake and ice cream and is a charter member of Friendship Knights of Pythias lodge.
A Meadowbrook summer resident reported a large animal in her back yard early Friday. Her husband, a Bath man, identified the creature as a bull moose, and the moose fled into the woods when he stepped outside.
Marriot Small, daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Small of Pleasant Street, has come back home from Memorial Hospital after several days of treatment for a virus.
