Wells Pioneered by Andrew S Merrill at Summer Resorts

Andrew S Merrill operated an artesian well boring machine across several resorts this summer. He completed a 70 ft well at South Harpswell for N N Jones yielding four gallons per minute, a 160 ft Auburn colony well with six gpm, and an eight gpm 70 ft well for Charles Ensign of Boston at South Harpswell. At Orrs Island he finished a 55 ft well for P L Jones with four gpm and has two wells pending at East Harpswell. Merrill’s scow sank during transport but a wrecking crew recovered the machine within 48 hours without major damage, and the engine has run reliably since.
