Citizens worry as the Bath city dump near homes and Kelley Athletic Field grows into a rat infested, stinking nuisance. The Independent urges a studied city response to protect public health, comfort, and safety for residents and visitors.
Citizens protest the closure of the City Hall women's restroom, arguing it harms public access to a needed facility in the modern municipal building. Critics urge reopening or dedicated staff to supervise the space, noting other cities provide such amenities for visitors and workers.
The Anchorage in Bath Maine opened to the public Saturday with a formal Sunday ceremony. Major William N Howard and Mrs Howard operate the 22 room estate at Washington and Grove, offering dining rooms and a catering service, modernized living spaces, and year round service.
Wiscasset rallied in the eighth to beat Bath 11 to 9 Sunday afternoon. Charley Rowe hit two home runs and C. McCobb led a 14 hit attack with four hits for Wiscasset. Rupe Lewis started for Bath while McCobb and Stevens shared pitching duties for the winners. Monday guest Thomas Barry visited Bath friends.
Tests for automobile operating licenses were held in Bath on Wednesday for 80 local residents and about a dozen nearby towns. The examination included a written test and practical driving from City Hall through Bath's business district, with officers directing traffic.
Bath Country club sent three players to the Maine Amateur Resident Golf Tournament in Augusta. Rodney E. Ross Jr and Al Clarke Jr reached the quarter finals before falling. Wilfrid Girard lost 5 3 to George Wilson. Ross beat Eddie Abbott 3 2 in the morning but lost to Walter Reed 1 up in the afternoon. Clarke had a three up lead over Carl Bradbury but Bradbury rallied with four holes to go and won on the 18th.
Mrs Mary Bartlett of Waterville and Miss Margaret Dealey of Lewiston were appointed delegates to the National convention at a Maine Council of Catholic Women meeting in Hotel Sedgwick. Alternate delegates were Mrs Smith and Mrs Charles Lamey. Bishop McCarthy sent regrets. About 60 Council members attended as luncheon and a panel on Catholic action followed. Benediction was held at St Marys Church.
Road work begins where state maintenance ends toward Sebasco Lodge and Rock Garden Inn. The 16 foot wide path will gain five feet to meet Highway Commission standards, with rock blasting and fills removing turns. Completion aims to reach Sebasco Lodge and village, then extend toward Basin within a year if funds permit.
John Green of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America urges U S housing authorities to fund 500 new low rent homes in Bath. Bath Daily Times shows nine rentals in Bath, two in Woolwich, one in West Bath, with many houses vacant or under construction. Justice Edward P Murray heard the case in Bangor with briefs due in 10 days. opposing side represented by John P Carey. A second suit, Keith Pierce vs Edward A Kenney, Bath auto crash, was settled prior to hearing.
Jack Verheus of Bedford Street reports his father and sister in Helder are safe but in different cities since the German invasion. A 19 year old cousin who joined the Dutch army at Christmas was taken prisoner. his exact location remains unknown to family.
The U.S. Marines, authorized at 34 000, offer adventure travel education and pay. A recruiting party visits the Augusta post office August 1 2 and 3 for interviews and exams, with transportation to Portland and on to Boston for enlistment. Requirements include 18 30 years age native born or naturalized health good character 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 9 in height and proportional weight.
City Marshal Joseph A. Butler, acting commander of Battery D, 240th Coast Artillery, spoke at the Rotary luncheon at Hotel Sedgwick. He described the Bath company’s camp work at Fort Williams, gun practice records, and long range targeting including a 1.55 mm gun sighting near Portland Head Lighthouse. Guests included visiting Rotarians and officials from Carmel, Lewiston, Riverton, Belmont, and Boston.
Battery D of the Maine National Guard arrived at Bath from Fort Williams for a camp transfer. The unit, praised for subcalibre 155 mm firing, will aid an upcoming Home Guard organized in Bath under federal and state supervision. Of 79 members, 60 are Bath residents with several from nearby towns seeking to join.
The Carry-On 4-H club boys cattle judging team from Richmond visited Neil S. Bishop’s pure bred Jersey dairy farm at Bowdoinham on Friday to receive instruction in cattle judging. Bishop, a former vocational agriculture instructor and cattle judging coach, also belonged to the University of Maine cattle judging team.
West Bath grange lists committees for its annual lawn party scheduled for August 15 to 17. The general committee is composed of past masters led by Leon M. Genthner and others. Various booths and tasks are assigned to named members, with Mrs. Olive White handling the shooting gallery and Bazin Lemont coordinating penny games.

Mrs. Herman L. Stover of Boston, visiting sister Mrs. John J. Keegan of Grove Street, departs Monday for Harpswell Center to spend the rest of the summer at the Stover homestead. She will be joined soon by Mr. and Mrs. George Stover of New Dorp Staten Island who will spend August there.
