Hi Esmaraos Fine Showing On Trial Tests
The million dollar twin screw diesel yacht Hi Esmaro, largest clipper steam yacht in the country, met all tests during official trials on Saturday. Eight runs over the Rockland course averaged 16 knots. steering with wheel hard over yielded a 800 foot turning diameter. Full speed ahead to full speed astern brought her to a stop in 21 seconds, with 45 seconds to run full speed astern. The day was ideal, with a calm ocean and cool air. The Hi Esmaros predecessor Vanda from Bath Iron Works watched, and its captain appeared eager for a race. The Vanda, recently fitted with new propellers, ran parallel and astern at times.

Scates Attacks Plan To Increase Gasoline Tax
John Clarke Scates of Westbrook, ex-member of the State Highway commission, challenged a plan to raise the gasoline tax from four to five cents a gallon. He told the Portland Lion Club that proponents misstate the revenue use and that a $900,000 gain would not fund 35 miles of road. He concluded motorists pay all the tax they should.
