Old Naval Craft Scourge Rebuilt Here Years Ago

Bath shares in the fame of the U S Scourge, an active unit of the U S Navy during the Mexican War. Originally the coastwise steamer Bangor, she was salvaged and rebuilt in Bath after fire on her second trip. She served as a small but pivotal war vessel, later renamed Scourge, and took part in the Gulf campaigns against Alvarado, Tuxpan, and Tabasco before disappearing in 1856 after leaving Pensacola for New Orleans.

West Point Fisherman’s Cats Inspire Local Folklore

Everett Wallace, a West Point fisherman, maintains a large, loyal cat family at his home near West Point village. His feline brood, sometimes numbering up to 40, follows him like a dog and returns to him at dusk when called by name. He hopes to reach about 75 cats, feeding them with fish, their favored treat, as they roam his porch and nearby woods in a quaint local tableau.
