Eighty men begin a three day drive starting Monday to raise 7000 for gym equipment and staff at Bath Y M C A. The campaign, led by J Edward Drake, targets two years of financial stability and strengthens programs for local boys.
The Old North Church in Bath, built in 1802 by the North Society led by Gov. William King, moved from Sewall yard to a New England storehouse site. The 1803 Paul Revere bell was funded by subscriptions, later housed in City Hall Belfry, and the church’s life includes ministers Asa Lyman and John Wallace Ellingwood. The bell’s journey reflects Bath’s civic and religious shifts, ending with 1848 sale and repurposing as a storehouse and shipyard use.
The City Council held a short special session on the new poll tax law. Poll taxes become due May 1 1916 with a 2 percent discount if paid by June 1 1916 and 7 percent interest charged from May 1 1916 for unpaid taxes after July 1 1916. The D A R petition was referred to the Finance committee. Mayor Small read a gratitude letter from W H Thompson Jr of Texas Co thanking the council for extending the shipyard wharves license.
Strawberries drop to 30 cents a box as new compressed air machines arrive at the Texas yard. The yacht Winchester at the BI W yard is painted black with a three inch waterline and red copper on the bottom. The fishing boat No Name, Captain Cromwell and First Officer Stephens, arrived from Five Island Tuesday afternoon with clams 100 weight haddock cod and 100 flounders, with the flounders selling out first.
Easter Sunday in Phippsburg was marked by a hard east wind and heavy rain that dampened church decorations and congregational participation. Despite a week of planning, ministers, choirs, and parishioners faced disappointment, while road repairs and local errands continued amid soggy conditions and efforts to keep transportation moving.
The express steam yacht Winchester, built at Bath Iron Works for P. W. Rouss of New York, will launch this Saturday at 10 50 am. Mrs. and Mrs Rouss accompany the party from New York in Mr. Rouss's private car. Gates open at 10 40 am for public viewing before the launching.
Four Bath Masonic bodies appoint a committee to organize a corporation for purchasing or erecting a Masonic Temple. A meeting at Masonic Hall on Thursday at 7 30 p m will launch organization with several properties under consideration and financing steps to secure a location. Bath hosts two lodges and allied orders with about five hundred members.
Mrs Margaret L McFarland marked her 94th birthday at 115 Dummer Street Bath receiving gifts and congratulations from relatives and neighbors. A longtime Elm Street Baptist Church member she lives alone after her husband Johns death and enjoys helping with housework. An active church figure Harry Berry was elected captain of Pastor Evans class team with Cedar Grove slated for the season opener.
A letter from Georgetown describes a near fatal carriage accident on a hill near Mrs Annie M Jones's cottage. Mrs George West, her daughter in law, and two grandchildren escaped injury as the wagon toppled when a horse startled by Dr Horace Cragin's running car bolted. The wagon was taken for repairs while the occupants were unharmed. The Hall Repair Fund gains donors and local residents feature in social notes and home moves.
