Costly Collection Practice Sparks Stamp Ballet

A Bathman received a four cent bill from an out of town firm for a year’s balance. He sent four cents in stamps and later got a receipt. He calculated the postage costs: two cents to mail the bill, two cents to send the stamps, and two cents for the receipt, totaling six cents to settle a four cent debt.

Efficient billing by check receipts cuts postage waste

Ada Negri notes how a clerk reduced mailing costs by using check receipts. The method, inspired by New England Telephone, adds slips on bills and returns payments with minimal paper. The system saves two cents per bill and supports the idea that a cleared check is a perfect receipt. Edna Worthley Underwood is cited as author.
