Suspected man surrender in murder case tied to alibi

Oliver P. Smith of Cincinnati surrendered to Indianapolis police Friday morning. He claims to have spent Thursday in Weisburg and Suoman with James and Mrs Bradley, posing as a missionary who could not pay rent for a hall. Mrs Bradley loaned him 500 dollars. He bought a postcard from Miss Franke, the postmistress, and she alerted her uncle. He later bought an Indianapolis train ticketas the Cincinnati Post carried a wanted picture. He asserts innocence and says his wife was alive after he left.

Birthday Parties Honor Ida Harvey At Muller's Ball

A North Pole themed 20th birthday celebration for Miss Ida Harvey drew about sixty five guests from Haymond Spades Batesville Cincinnati Adams Church and Morris at Muller's Ball Saturday night. George Grunkemeyer won the flag on the North Pole point after lively dancing and a dainty lunch. The event was described as one of the season’s most enjoyable social affairs. Charity Funds Deaths Of Week Estate Trustees Named

The John Hillenbrand Estate Company set aside 5014 bonds with interest to charity. A six member board representing six city churches will oversee distribution, led by Frank Walsman as president and John Nickel as vice president. The Willenbrand Estate also provided a 1000, to be used if needed before bond interest starts.

Peculiar Plant Draws Crowds At Brockman Shoe Store

A five year old snake umbrella plant from India on display in Brockman shoe store window has blossomed for the first time. Grown from a bulb kept dry in fall, it grew to 5 feet 4 inches in two weeks with no soil or nourishment, feeding entirely from the bulb about nine inches across. The plant’s snake like stem and umbrella shaped foliage have astonished passersby during the past week.

Small Blaze Triggers Alarm In Batesville

A street alarm prompted Batesville residents to sweep streets and the Fire Company to the SK Creuzman lunch room where smoke and a dim light suggested a large blaze that proved minor. Mr Kreuz tan doused a burning blanket with a bucket of water, smoke billowed out, but damage was slight and cause unknown. Nearby notices mention family visits, travels, and local business ads.

One Thousand a Year Post Office Pay Boost

The post office appropriation bill passed by the National House of Representatives last Tuesday adds rural mail carriers to one thousand dollars yearly. The raise, deploying an increase of 100 to the current 900, takes effect July 1, 1931. M. H.
