Disloyalty accusations target Indiana Republicans

Questionnaires Mailed to Registrants for Classification

The first five percent of the questionnaires were mailed last Saturday with five percent sent daily until complete. If a registrant is missed, he must secure a blank questionnaire and fill it out. County attorneys will assist registrants at no charge. Each registrant has seven days to return the completed questionnaire, excluding Sundays and holidays. The registrant picks one of five clauses for entitlement, but the board will determine real classification from the answers.

Red Cross Christmas Campaign Seeks Members in Batesville

The Red Cross asks every resident over 12 to join as a member by Christmas Eve. The effort is for memberships not donations, with a fund set up by local business leaders to cover memberships for those unable to pay. Applications are at Red Cross Headquarters in the Wilker Building Thursday evening 7:30 to 9:00.

Fire destroys house on Feeney farm near town

The Feeney farm house south of town was fully consumed by fire Sunday afternoon. Neighbors could not save most furnishings as Edward Norwald and wife, new to the farm, were away. Suspected defective flue aided the blaze amid frigid weather. Norwald had only moved in a few months. The Feeney property drew attention after the January death of three bachelor brothers and the subsequent passing of a fourth.

Home on Furlough From Camp Taylor

Arthur Schene and several Batesville men returned on furlough from Camp Taylor last Saturday and stayed through Tuesday with relatives. Schene, known as Hickory, works as a registered pharmacist in the Base Hospital drug dispensary. The group notes slower drill due to heavy snow and anticipates Christmas or New Year furloughs home for the holidays.

Death of Dr Joseph X Zitek a Batesville physician

Dr Joseph X Zitek a widely known Batesville physician died after weeks of illness at his Walnut Street home. He was 66 and had practiced in Ripley County for 35 years serving as secretary of the City Board of Health and Pure Food Commissioner. Services will be held at St Louis church with interment in the church cemetery. He was remembered for integrity knowledge and community service leaving a widow and many friends.

Son Merle Dickey Hints Foreign Service Start

Berry Dickey and wife report a letter from son Merle in the Hawaiian Islands saying his troop is preparing to leave soon. He cannot say his final destination but his parents understand they are bound for abroad. Merle has been in Hawaii three years with the regulars and hoped for a home visit soon, but fears he will not see home before entering foreign service.

Enlists in Navy from Wittenberg College Students

Arthur Gringie son of Rev Gringie and wife from Batesville enlists in the United States Navy after passing the Cincinnati exam. He is stationed at Camp Farragut Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago. Thirteen Wittenberg students from Cincinnati joined, twelve in navy, one in army. The group volunteered to serve together as the war reaches more homes and Batesville hopes for their safe return.

Christmas meal fund aid from local groups to Camp Taylor

Local groups and citizens raised 3125 dollars plus 63.75 dollars from Adams township to fund a Christmas dinner for Camp Taylor soldiers. They sent 150 pounds of dressed turkey and Knights of Columbus members supplied cigars to Laughery township soldiers serving abroad. This Christmas away from home will be remembered by the boys.

Funeral of Michael Wiedeman at Penn town

Rev Schreiber was called to Penn town last Thursday where he preached the funeral sermon of Michael Wiedeman who was buried from the Baptist church there. Wiedeman aged 69 died the previous Sunday after two years of illness. A respected farmer he is survived by eight children and many longtime friends. Miss Dorothy Beck went to Indianapolis Friday to spend a few days with friends.
