Batavia Metal Plans Role in Army Heavy Artillery Drive
Batavia Metal Products, Batavia’s largest plant, is among 56 firms chosen for a major war expansion to boost heavy artillery shells. The Army envisions a several hundred percent production rise for 155 mm 8 inch and 240 mm shells, with Batavia preparing new facilities and hiring to meet demand. Brig. Gen. Hardy cited roughly 100 million dollars in tool, press, and furnace investments as part of the expansion. The Gustav line usage by the Fifth Army last May illustrates the scale, while WPB and Manpower priorities push for maximum capacity and skilled labor.
