Newspaper Men Visit Basin Immigrant Leaders

Immig r ation commissioner Roy W Schenck and a party of correspondents visited Basin on Saturday noon arriving by train. They toured Basin displays, dined at Booths, and viewed irrigation projects and melon patches. Local officials and editors praised Basin progress while noting potential newspaper promotion to Washington and future settlers.

Gulf to coast line completion forecast by high official

A Burlington official, who declines to be named, told The Republican that the gulf to coast line likely won’t be finished until fall 1912 and probably not usable before the Panama Canal is completed. He asserts the project may await the start of the trans continental traffic race.

Inspector visits Miles City to study new water filter

A. C. Moore inspected the newly installed filter system at Miles City Montana in connection with the water plant. He traveled there early in the week to observe operation and gather details to aid installing a similar filter at his local plant.

Free Melon Day at Fair Promised Thursday

The fair board plans a free melon day on Thursday September 28 at the fairgrounds. Melons will be served free outside the grounds and the event is to become annual. $160 is allocated for Rocky Ford pure seed, with growers aided. an association to market Basin melon products will be formed following a Republican editorial.

Greek Confesses Implicates Others In Kane Murder

Steve Brown confined at Basin hospital admits to killing his companion and names John Pappas Peter Pappas and Mike Janis as accomplices. The four men were arrested at Gheridan and detained as officers review the case. Prosecutor West visited the hospital Tuesday evening to review evidence with Brown and state witnesses.

Burlington delays noon stops to boost Basin service

An agent for Burlington told The Republican last Saturday the railroad will adjust its schedule to stop all trains in Basin at the noon hour. He blamed poor Grey Bull service and said the change aims to improve patron accommodation, benefiting Basin businesses.

H 8 Ridgelys talk on early Basin history recalls 1887 arrival of W 8 Collins from Douglas and his move to Bonanza in 1888. Early Basin settlers and neighbors on Paint Rock

Joe Henry of Big Trails and Frank Werner arrived from Colorado to settle Otter creek with Tude Nelson and Myers from Utah. Paint Rock had four women that winter as mail failed to reach from November to spring. Notables include Booth, Basin mayor and bank president, Spratt who introduced Hereford cattle, Allen family fortunes, and Whaley’s Texas herd arrival, with life on the Basin described as lonely and frugal.

Suit filed to halt county from disposing court house square

W G Collings filed in district court last Tuesday asking the county commissioners be barred from selling any part of the court house square. The lawsuit seeks to determine if the commissioners have the right to dispose of the site for a new federal building. The case, described as friendly, will be argued before Judge Parmelee in Newcastle with County Attorney West for the commissioners. Residents of the county will closely watch the outcome.

Basin fair preparations promise best in Basin's history

Preparations near completion for Basin Wyoming fair to open on the 20th with a record attendance expected. The fair board selects purple and white for decorations while engineers set fourteen modern street light clusters and city officials coordinate lighting with Billings Electrics. Aviator Mr Baker plans multiple flights, a seven foot propeller plane, and a 60 horsepower engine. Races and bucking contests are highlighted as key attractions with strong private cooperation promised for a splendid, well organized festival.
