Salvation Army drive shows strong Big Horn County giving

Big Horn County ongoing Salvation Army drive nears completion with district by district tallies. Current totals: Greybull leads at 308.80 over 170 quota, Basin 196 over 140, Burlington 40.70 over 30. Other towns report varied returns, with a county total of 787.45 and 415 still to report. County Chairman Wm. C. Snow expects a three to five hundred dollar county exceedance.

Death of Mrs May in Basin Gardena Home

Mrs. Frank May died last Sunday at the home of her son W H May in Basin Gardena after a paralytic stroke endured the previous Thursday. Born Emery E May in 1860 at Corning New York she married Frank May in 1864. The family later lived in Michigan and Wisconsin before settling in Central City Nebraska where they have resided forty years. She is survived by her husband Col W H May a son and daughter in Central City and a daughter in California. She belonged to the M B church and was well regarded during her many visits here.

Remains Interred in City After Last Monday’s Service

The remains were taken to City for interment last Monday accompanied by the husband and Miss May. The sympathy of the city will be extended to the bereaved family.

Duck season opens next week with eastern migratory birds

The open season for ducks and other migratory birds runs from next Tuesday until December 2, with rails excluded from hunting after December 1. Ducks are reported more plentiful this year due to dreath and forest fires north of us driving birds here where feed is abundant. locals anticipate the sport and expect loud popping of ammunition across the area next week.

Persistent Efforts Highlight Otto Farmer’s Water Struggles

Fred Harmon, a substantial farmer near Otto, faced a dry season with insufficient water for crops. He hauled water to save potatoes and fruit trees, planning a larger acreage next season to recover losses. Harmon remains a proponent of a reservoir at the head of the Greybull River, regardless of cost.

Altman Fined in Liquor Transport Case in Billings

G. F. Altman, a Billings hide buyer, pleaded guilty in district court to transporting liquor from the county into Montana. He received a $350 fine, his Republic truck was confiscated and to be sold at public auction, and the liquor will stay with the sheriff until destruction orders are issued. Officers vow strict enforcement of the new liquor laws.

Death of Mrs Osborn Mentioned in Cody Funeral

Word arrived this week of the death of Mrs. Chas Osborn in Cody. She was the daughter of EB C Hoover of Basin. Hoover and his son G Ralph Hoover attended the Cody funeral. Deceased was well known to early Basin settlers. the community extends sympathy.

Early Settler J A Williamson Visits Basin

J A Williamson, an early settler and prominent rancher near Burlington, visited Basin at the start of the week. He was among the first settlers in the Greybull valley and settled on his current ranch after serving as land office register at Lander, ending in the last Cleveland administration.

County Valuation and School District No 17 Levies Noted

The state board abstract lists Big Horn county valuation as 16 166 386 dollars. At the county commissioners meeting the levies for school district No 17 are state and county 0 1266 special school 0 13 bond interest 0 0222 city 0 188 total 0 4067.

Big Horn County Dominates State Fair Exhibits

Douglas Wyoming September 12 The state fair judging continues but Big Horn county leads all divisions of the agricultural exhibit. Big Horn has a larger display than all other counties combined with little竞争 from Washakie county. Firsts and seconds already exceed last year as visitors praise Basin exhibits and await future sales opportunities. The Big Horn delegation returns home early next week with optimism and bacon.

Lieut John Arnott Jr Named Deputy Game Warden

Governor Carey and State Game Warden Judkins appointed Lieut. John P. Arnott Jr. deputy game warden for Basin district. Arnott, a returning soldier, served from 1917 in Co C 3rd Wyoming Infantry and 116th and 156th trains, mustered out July 1 after 18 months overseas.

Basin School Notes Prompt Staff Additions

Up to yesterday 350 pupils enrolled this term in Basin schools with more expected. In the primary grade 78 youths are taught by one teacher, and the district lacks a primary instructor and a math and science teacher. Miss Alice Thayer of Nome Wisconsin has accepted the domestic science post and will arrive soon. she is a Stout College graduate and noted for vocational training.

Ed Young Returns Home From War After Poisoning

Ed Young son of Mr and Mrs David Young of Otto arrived in Basin yesterday from San Francisco on a thirty day furlough after being poisoned during battle in France and treated in government hospitals He was met by his brother James Young and taken to his parents home His condition is reported as good and he expects to be restored to full health soon amplifying good news for local friends

Governor Carey Eyes State Road Contract For Big Horn County

In a letter to P P Anderson Carey outlines plans to let a contract by September for the Yellowstone highway segment from the county line to Manderson and to survey routes from Greybull to Lovell. He notes work over $2000 must be contracted and urges local bid participation and possible local labor employment on the southern county project.

Grandstand upgrades urged after crowded county fair

The county fair drew large crowds signaling an inadequate current grand stand and exhibit hall. The article notes plans for permanent improvements lasting years and credit to the county, and recounts a theft scare resolved when M R Douglas found and returned a money sack left at Rex Theatre.

Prisoners Sentenced After Plea Hearings

A number of inmates sought guilty pleas before Judge Metz on Tuesday evening. John Creech charged with a statutory offense was paroled for good behavior. Herman Smyser convicted of sodomy received one year to 18 months in prison. Louis Tritch charged with stealing a fiddle from WEB. Webb received a short jail term.

Road Work Contract Awarded Near Rairden Bridge

The county commissioners let a contract to Gould & Welsh for 4350 to perform road work adjacent to the Rairden bridge. They were the lowest bidders. Work will start at once and improve the road to its best condition ever.

Basin court opens term with drainage case hearings

Full term of court to start September 22 in Basin with civil cases heard. Judge Metz recently resumed sessions. on September 8 protests by Occidental Oil & Gas Co. and Pryde and Denney were addressed. Pryde and Denney settled out. Occidental matter pending. Trial docket set for September 22 to 26 including Doty vs Lewis and several canal and drainage cases.

F. A. Little Buys Home in Basin for County Official

County Attorney Frank A. Little and Mrs. Little purchase the West residence and will move to Basin at first of the coming month. Little relocates to Basin due to increased county business requiring his constant presence. Mr. and Mrs. West have not announced future plans.

Appointment of George Zimmerman as deputy county treasurer

Mrs. Magie V. Rhodes appointed George Zimmerman deputy county treasurer and he assumed duties the first of the week. Zimmerman is a local high school graduate praised for sterling character and received broad approval. H. L. Wise and wife left Wednesday for Wibaux Montana to visit his sister.
