Airplane Flights Surprise Crowds At County Fair

At the fair grounds on Wednesday afternoon a large crowd enjoyed a full program of events. Winners included Adolphist and Pearce in races, Gillis and Lampman in novelty and horse contests, and Rogers and Adolph in free for all events. Aviator Carr demonstrated airplane flight despite limited fuel, while the Big Horn Basin bucking contest featured riders such as Olson and Mayer. Governor Carey arrived late to a western welcome from Senator Skovgard and A.S. Mercer, joined by Dr. B. F. Davis and W. T. Judkins.

Sweeney estate files $36000 railroad damage suit

Owen E. Sweeney as administrator of John C. Sweeney sues the railroad administration in Sheridan county district court for 36000 alleging negligence of the main line passenger train engineer led to Sweeney's death while attempting to move a gasoline motor car from the track. The suit, brought by attorneys Hyde Brome Enterline, is described as among the state's largest against the railroad.

Fair Dances Draw Crowds At Basin Band Pavilion

The Basin band played each night beside the Rex theatre pavilion drawing large crowds at the fair. Dancers enjoyed the music and praised the quality of the tunes while the band earned a tidy sum for the organizers, becoming a top fair attraction.

Basin Welcomes New Drug Store Opening

C B Abbott of Gehring Nebraska and Eppelsheimer of the same town plan a Basin drug store in the Pioneer block formerly used by Peterson company. They expect to open by October first with a modern complete shop and broad sundry line, receiving a cordial Basin welcome.

Captain Osborn Visits Basin on Leave

Captain J W Osborn of Des Moines Iowa recently returned from overseas army medical duties and arrived last Tuesday to visit his son Boyd V Osborn of Midwest. He and his wife plan to tour county sections during a fifteen day leave and he may settle permanently in this part of Wyoming.

President Wilson in Billings on Sept 11 Visit

Billings prepares for President Wilson to visit September 11 with a Western welcome. He will tour the city after breakfast on the train and address the crowd at Midland Empire fairgrounds about the league of nations and other issues in a nonpartisan event expected to draw a large Montana audience.

Prisoners Sentenced After Guilty Pleas At County Court

Wednesday morning three inmates from the county jail appeared before Judge Metz and pled guilty. Lowell H Howell 16 was given an indeterminate term at the Colter Industrial School for grand larceny. Louis Goodman 26 received 3 to 5 years in the Rawlins Penitentiary for grand larceny. John E Flanigan 19 was sent to the Colter Industrial School on issuing fraudulent checks.

Northwest Medical Society Hosts Lovell Banquet Address on Influenza

The Northwest Medical Society met in Lovell yesterday and held a banquet last night. Chicago surgeon Dr. McArthur gave an address on The Surgical Aspects of Influenza. Officers elected: Dr. T B Torruson Lovell president, Dr. Gorder Greybull vice president, Dr. Bertha Hamilton Greybull secretary-treasurer.

Waiter James Forrest Arrested for Assault on Elder Farmer

James Forrest a waiter at the Big Horn Cafe was arrested yesterday charged with assaulting George Nicholson a farmer from Burlington county aged over seventy. Forrest was arraigned before Police Judge Patten and fined ten dollars plus costs.

Bucking Winners Highlight Big Horn County Fair Close

The Big Horn County fair closed with record attendance and receipts nearly $1,000 higher than any prior year. Winners included Buster Good first in the finals Bucking contest, Curtis leading multiple races, and Constance Skovgard top in the ladies cow pony events.

Soldiers Day at the Fair Honors Late War Veterans

On Wednesday the Red Cross welcome home effort and Mothers and Friends committees invited late war veterans and guests to a box picnic at the free camp grounds. Basin and outside donors provided boxes. Two boxes yielded tasting luncheons with coffee and ice cream for many soldiers and sailors. The committee chairs offer thanks for donations and credits for ribbons and ice cream. Names of assisting members to be published next week.

Lovell Chronicle notes fifty seven Lovell residents bought tickets to Basin on Wednesday and 83 on Thursday with many more arriving by car. The county praise the county fair’s fine exhibits and attendance and urge broader county support to rival the state fair.

Tire thieves strike car in St Joe near Nadler’s drugstore

Thieves stole two new tires from Chas Blynn’s car parked near Nadler’s pharmacy in St. Joseph Thursday night. Police report the incident with no arrests made at this time.

Historical pageant marks Wyoming territory anniversary

Under Mrs. Elaine Kinder’s supervision a county pageant staged at the fair celebrates Wyoming’s fiftieth anniversary as a territory. It highlights early surveyors in the Big Horn Basin, the Greybull valley, Jewish and Mormon pioneer routes, Lovell’s beet sugar growth, and Deaver’s settlement milestones from 1914 to 1917.

Petition Circulating for Special Session to Aid Greybull Valley Farmers

A circulating petition by J. B. Atherly and A. B. Hartman requests the governor to call a special legislative session to provide relief for Greybull valley farmers. The petition seeks authorization to build reservoirs to supplement the irrigation water supply and is being signed by water users and the public.

Labor Day Fest At Greybull Draws Big Crowd

The Greybull Labor Day celebration Monday drew an extra large crowd with over a hundred attendees from Basin. A big program of sports provided the amusements.

Car Stolen During Fair, Sheriff Sifts Clues

Rawleigh Remedy manager Kraft reported a car theft during a local fair. The sheriff's office took charge, and officials expect to locate the thief within a day or so.

Basin Schools Open For New Term Under McNown

Basin public schools opened last Monday under Superintendent McNown. Only about one third of the expected pupils registered the first day due to the fair. Enrollment by grade ranged from 3 in 12th grade to 72 in 1st. The board needs two teachers for domestic science and mathematics.

Parades at the Fair Highlight Day of Prizes

The fair featured daily parades with awards on Wednesday. Basin State Bank won first for best business feat, Basin Hardware Co. took second, and the Salvation Army earned top prize for the best novelty float. Marshals Henry Payne and S. Skovgard led the procession with the Greybull band, followed by cowboys, soldiers, and decorated floats from Basin State Bank and numerous local firms.

Ed Young to Return Home After War Injuries

Jim Young announced during the fair that his brother Ed Young, wounded by gas in the war and treated in several hospitals, is now recovering near San Francisco and expected to come home on furlough in a few days.

Man Killed in Cowley Worker Identified as Bulgarian Carpenter

Yesterday afternoon Louis PF Johnson a carpenter was killed in Cowley by falling from a ten foot scaffold. The Bulgarian man had lived in Lovell for three years and has no known relatives. Interment was held in Lovell.

Exhibits at the Big Fair Break Records for Entries

The agricultural exhibit set a new record with over five hundred more entries than any prior fair. Regions like Greybull faced water shortages, while others such as Manderson Lovell and Basin Gardens showcased extensive displays of grains vegetables fruits and novelties including Kentucky muskmelons and a kitchen garden section.
