Letter from Gapen Describes Display in Des Moines

Fire at Hart property damages oat sprouter

On Wednesday around four o'clock Mrs. Vandevender reported smoke from a frame building owned by B. C. Hart, formerly a garage. The fire was extinguished by Mr. Vandevender before firefighters arrived. The blaze started when a lamp attached to an oat sprouter fell, causing damage only to the machine.

Harry Bailey and wife, Joe Taylor and wife, and Ed McCoy fished upper Paint Rock the first of the week. They returned with a large catch and said they had a fine time away.

Col Mercer Returns to Push Wyoming Oil Development

Col. A. 8. Mercer, back from Chicago, reports plans to bring capitalists to inspect the Wyoming oil region. He expects large scale work soon, with prospect holes east of Manderson under way and a refinery likely after fields open. He forecasts gasoline under 15 cents a gallon and by products worth about $4 per barrel.

Post Office Moves to New Quarters on Fourth Street

In New Quarters Postmaster Gibson completed the transfer of office furniture into the new building on Fourth Street to avoid inconveniencing patrons. The improved quarters bring conveniences and closer access to the business district. H Ridgely visited Billings and discussed R L Bakers aeroplane to be used at the fair. Ridgely said the machine is of the latest type and flights here should be as successful as any in the country. Baker is ambitious and aims to deliver the best exhibitions yet seen in the west.

Tex Rieves Escapes Park County Jail in Cody

Word reached the Park County sheriff that Tex Rieves escaped from Cody’s Park County jail Wednesday night and remains at large. He was jailed on horse stealing charges from last week after failing to post 1000 bond. Rieves had worked since July driving a tourist wagon in Cody and may have exploited a planned transfer to Basin to flee.

Inspectors tour canyon work near Boysen dam

Superintendents Young and Robbins visited town with the inspection train yesterday. Anson Higby joined the party and toured the canyon south of Thermopolis reporting men installing machinery at Boysen dam. Burlington crews repair the track while Higby praises the scenery as a future western show place.

J N Bragg of Holdrege Nebraska returned home after scouting the Basin country for farmers from his locality He visited Oklahoma and Canada but found neither satisfactory He was greatly pleased with the Basin and plans to report its promise to his community He expects to bring many settlers next spring to the area.

Will Aid Settlers by Photolithographing Land Plots

Washington announces that the general land office will soon provide photolithographic copies of all land plots. This replaces hand-made plats and will cut costs for settlers who previously paid 2 to 6 dollars per copy.
