Oil boom spreads as Basin Bonanza field heats up

News from the Bonanza field reports rapid town filling and heavy outside interest. A $1 million Western Petroleum set to commence drilling on the Wm. Paumer ranch near Bonansa with R. H. Ewart to represent the company. Other investors, rigs, and contracts are moving in as several claims and nearby sites show potential, despite recent heavy rains slowing work.

Whaley School to Close With Hiawatha Play

Closing exercises at Whaley School Saturday May 2 at eight o'clock feature a dramatization of Longfellow's Hiawatha by the pupils. Shell Creek Saturday Evening Club also ends, refreshments to follow the program. Republicans and Progressives in the Big Horn Basin meet in Cody to unite on common ground for the campaign and to discuss the Zaring candidacy for judge of the 6th district. The gathering at the Cody Club includes representatives from Worland Thermopolis Basin Powell and Cody among others. Also covered are notes on wood pulp imports, Montana’s Granite Peak, Norwegian tree planting, fire risks, and a synopsis of the stockraising homestead bill detailing 640 acre entries with restrictions and potential grazing leases.

Acme Plans Weekend Pictures and Possible May 7 Show

At The Acme a choice program of pictures for Saturday and Sunday has been secured. A musical comedy show may be offered next Thursday May 7 titled Wanted a Wife performed by a company of 10 people, mostly girls. New scenery will be completed by then to aid the production.

Prof. Brewer reports that President C. A. Duniway of the State University will visit Basin on May 21 and deliver an address that evening. Time and venue to be announced.

Calf Ownership Case Heard In Call Court

Judge Metz heard an appeal in the George Randall versus Ben Coday case over calf ownership. Thos M Hyde represented the Codays, and W C Snow represented Randall. Evidence was completed, with argument to the court set for morning. W A Robb and wife expected from Monte Vista to reside in Basin.

Robbers Blow Safe At Kane Post Office

Robbers entered the Kane Mercantile Co store last Monday night and broke open the post office safe. About 3600 in funds were taken from the post office and 80 to 90 from the store. Police traced five suspects to Cowley and Powell but found no stolen money. Sheriff Wickwire and Billings officials pursue the case, hoping for quick arrests.

Market Letter Notes Mixed Cattle Gains at Kansas City

Kansas City stock yards report cattle prices advancing after Monday gains though stockers and feeders closed the week 10 to 35 lower. Receipts total 9,000 head, down a third from last Monday, with natives 8.60 to 8.90, middle grade steers 7.50 to 8.50, cows 5.75 to 7.75, veal calves 8.00 to 9.50, and Western steers around 7.40 to 8.50. Hog market steady to 5 higher, top 8.70 by buyers, 8.65 by packers. Texas sheep and Colorado lambs rise marginally. wool lambs 7.80 to 8.15, wethers 5.00 to 5.35, ewes 4.35 to 5.00.

Gets Thirty Days Adultery Case Before Justice

W A Robinson was tried before Justice Bennetl on Monday charged with adultery with Mrs Katy O Miller. State was represented by W A Collins and C A Zaring defended. Witnesses for the state were John J Miller and his daughters Irene and Luella. Robinson testified in his own defense. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to thirty days in the county jail.
