At the Progress association dinner on Wednesday L O Gray presided in Mayor Berry’s absence. He said a full report could be given later on a proposed club diversion. Collins reported on the Buffalo Basin road proposal to be discussed Friday night. A letter about fronting Basin country for Joe Magis in New York will be read Friday. All interested in community welfare were invited to attend the club rooms meeting tonight.

Saturday evening the Acme theater presents Daniel in the Lion's Den a lavish Biblic al history reissue shown as a Vitagraph production. The show features two dramatic events the fiery furnace and Daniel in the lions den praised as a premier of photographic art.

Fire at Thermopelis on Broadway destroys cars

Fire discovered in the Ender ly gamage on Broadway in Thermopolie at 2 30 Sunday morning. Two cars were damaged, six completely destroyed. Injured are Lt Dana Carter and Mrs Chas Woods. No insurance on the building. Damage estimated at 16000 dollars.

Denver businessman praises Basin country prospects

A W Well, vice president of Spenger House Furnishing Co. of Denver, visited the Basin this week and spoke highly of the region. He aims to help Denver retailers establish trade with Basin merchants, predicting rapid population growth and full cultivation of farmland within two years.

Death of Mrs. S. H. Smith of Hugme

Mrs. S. H. Smith died Monday evening after a lingering illness. Born Sept 1865 in Cedar Rapids Iowa, she was 60 years old. She married S. I. Smith in 1883 at Kenesaw Nebraska. they lived in Basin since 1910. Survived by husband three sons Norval Beryl Adrian and daughter Mrs Paul Zimmerman, mother Mrs Maria Reed, sisters Mrs Susie Henderson and Mrs Mary Wenner, brother Wiley Reed. A respected community member, she contributed to school work and was active in the Woman's Club and Eastern Star. Funeral services were held under auspices of the local lodge.

A young ladies Kensington was held last Monday evening at the home of Miss Nellie Maxwell. Post event, guests enjoyed a social hour and refreshments. Acme plans a new weekly Pathé current events screening starting next Wednesday. Each show will include one or two reels with footage no older than 30 days. Promised are wartime images and pleasant surprises in the program.

Air raid by German airships hits Norfolk and Kings Lynn

German airships raided English coast towns including Yarmouth and Kings Lynn dropping 20 bombs that killed two civilians and injured many as windows shattered and homes damaged. Cromer Sheeringham and nearby Sandringham area received missiles. Experts debate the raiders type possibly airships used. French progress near Font a Mousson noted amid broader battles on Metz road corridors.

Farmers Institutes Play Planned by Extension Department

The extension department plans farmer institutes with the agricultural agent of Burlington. A tax program for the institutes will likely be published next week. County Agent A. H. Tedman announced an institute at Burlington on the 12th with sufficient speakers to benefit farmers tributary to that town.

Marilon Willis Undergoes Appendicitis Operation

Marilon Willis of Cowley was stricken with appendicitis last Sunday. He was taken to Basin hospital the next day with Dr. EB W. Ofort and L. J. Wils. Willis underwent an operation that was entirely successful and he is reported to be progressing well and expected to return home soon.
