Old Faithful and the early Big Horn explorations
In 1871 Hayden and Stevenson led a government party of about thirty to explore what would become Yellowstone National Park then called Wonderland. Hon O P Hanna guided, recalling the geyser name Old Faithful after a camp remark. The narrative follows explorations to the North Fork, Pryor Gap, and the Big Horn Basin, noting early gold finds at Bald Mountain, mineral prospects, and Hanna’s later experiences, including the 1880 Shell Creek murder of partner Charley White and Hanna’s discovery of White’s grave and his own gun with his initials.
