Hortense Zaring, five, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Zaring, was seriously hurt when a pile of bridge timbers collapsed at the court house grounds. She suffered four fractures of the right leg, including a compound fracture, and underwent immediate surgery at the hospital. Local friends aided, and doctors express cautious optimism for recovery.
Lou Blakesley Jr and Misa Nina Kendall, both of Basin, wed early this week. The groom is son of Mr and Mrs Lou Blakesley and the bride was a high school hero last year. Pearl Devore and wife return to Basin from Spokane and plan Basin residence. Pearl may resume with Tilton Taxi Service. New school building completion appears unlikely by opening day. high school might start later than grades.
Postmaster O. T. Gebhart plans a brief trip to Casper next Tuesday to visit his son Earl and the family. He will be away for a short time.
Miners in six states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois resume work as operators and union leaders prepare to seek signups. The deal accepts the 1922 wage scale and renews the checkoff system, with a full union referendum to follow in about ten days.
In the ten million poll on prohibition and the soldiers bonus 708000 recorded with results: for strict enforcement 271954 for modification 290172 repeal 146629. for bonus 344792 against 366167. The special woman’s vote on prohibition shows similar trend with 7363 for enforcement 8575 for modification 6529 repeal 0.

Last Friday the Markham well near Manderson was shot with 160 quarts of nitroglycerin in front of about 150 observers from Basin Manderson Worland and Thermopolis. The blast produced debris and oil in every shale bed while testing indicated potential commercial production with plans to drill to Muddy and Grey Bull sands.
A B Martin sold a half interest in the Oil Exchange Pool room to H M Shieve this week. The partners plan to provide Basin citizens with up to date conveniences and service, leveraging Shieve's stake in Northern Realty Company for strong local business.
Last Saturday afternoon an explosion from a backfire in the Public garage near Greybull caused near total ruin of the establishment. Firefighters arrived too late to prevent most damage as the blaze burned only minutes and ruined several cars by burning tires and upholstery.
Dr. Chester Harris and Burton Harris returned last Friday from a long auto and camping trip covering the coast, Glacier National Park, and Yellowstone. They say the journey was delightful and the outdoor life gave them evident tonic effect.
Miss Sarah Ellicott and Harry Lin don, both of Denver, were married in Billings on Wednesday morning. The groom works for the government reclamation service and the bride is the daughter of G. H. Ellicott, formerly of Basin.
Dr Manley a missionary from India traveling to Paint Rock lakes to lecture was struck by an appendicitis attack on a train near Basin last Saturday. He was rushed to Basin Hospital where an emergency operation was performed and he is reported to be getting along well.
The Republican will display election returns from the primary at its office Tuesday night and at the Rex Theatre for women and others as fast as received. County results arrive soon and statewide results come Wednesday morning. Rex Theatre reports strong crowds under new management.
Dad Payne marked his seventy fifth birthday on Monday by serving free lemonade to friends who wish him many more happy returns. He is said to have a large circle of friends who enjoyed the gesture.
Thermopolis Wyoming August 17 1922 letter from a Republican voter defending Governor Carey against claims of high state costs. The author notes appropriations originate in the House and require both chambers, defending Carey’s vetoes and insisting lawmakers share responsibility for budget decisions. Continuous on page nine.
Hyattville August 15. The writer urges southern district voters to support John Welnts in the county clerk nomination. He notes T W Olney is a holdover and warns that nominating an opponent from the central district would leave the south without representation.
Washington Aug 14 Agreement between railroad executives and labor leaders to hold another conference Thursday in New York aims to settle the shopmen’s strike. President Harding hesitates to issue his report to Congress, seeking a possible mutual settlement first. Seven railroad unions met with executives and planned to bring the key groups to New York for talks.
