Mercer Sr dies in Buffalo Wyoming after long illness

Asa Shinn Mercer born 1839 in Illinois led a varied life as teacher, college founder and early journalist. He moved to Seattle then helped bring women to Seattle by ship, founded the Washington University, served in Oregon senate, and published the Northwestern Live Stock Journal before moving to the Big Horn Basin. He died at Buffalo after chronic dysentery, survived by five children.

Young man released after failing to show registration card

A youth arrested at Greybull for lacking a registration card was brought to Basin. The sheriff at Lander advised, and Deputy Christensen released him after confirming he had complied with the law by losing the card.

Pool Hall Sold in Basin to Meador and Craig

Elliott Shaw closed a deal to sell the Oil Exchange pool hall to Ed Meador and J. Craig. The Basin resort is popular among local men and will gain modern improvements under the new ownership. Meador is a former Mann hotel manager, and Craig, new to Basin, has quickly made friends.

Christensen Stops at Fort Russell

Frank Christensen visited Company C at Fort Russell on the way home from Rawlins. The camp, near 2,000 men, won first prize for cleanliness and sanitation. Vaccinations were completed, a few illness related to shots occurred, rifles were issued, drilling occupied eight hours daily, and officers' treatment was well regarded. Christensen praised the troops as "as good a bunch of Americans as ever went to war."

Burlington man Ernest Agee returned from Fort Russell

Mrs Dr Benson an old friend of Mrs Frank Ewen of Beaver Creek is visiting the Ewen home for several days. Julian Snow reports his company in Columbus Missouri was ordered to the state mobilization camp at Nevada Missouri and has arrived there by now.
