Fires Stir town with week of blazes

A series of fires this week in town caused excitement as buildings including a house near the Republican office a barn behind Frank Judkins a rear telephone office and the Al Pease rooms suffered damage. Volunteers and telephone girls kept steady, preventing further loss and earning praise for loyalty.

Basin women meet to organize Red Cross assistance

The women of Basin are asked to gather at the Big Horn Theatre Saturday at three o clock to form a local Red Cross committee. The note urges every town woman to attend promptly to show patriotism and support the country’s Red Cross Society.

A new recruiting station for the Marines and United States Navy opened in Basin with headquarters at the Live Wire club. J le Hill, chief quartermaster in Denver, heads the western recruiting district, while Pr Hanson from Cheyenne oversees local operations. Chas McDonald reported a strong start from Manderson, and Kinzer of Hyattville touted improvements and good roads as Basin anticipates a week of feral days.

Recruits from the district will stay about two weeks to spur enthusiasm and patriotism. The men in charge are pleased with Basin opinions and expect to accomplish much from the effort.

Bishop Thomas to Visit Basin for Annual Visitation

Bishop Thomas of the Episcopal diocese of Wyoming will be in Basin on Wednesday April 11 for his annual visitation. Services at 7 30 p m will include a sermon and the rite of confirmation. The public is invited. Rev Allan R Chalmers of Cody will be ordained to the priesthood Thursday morning at 16.

Hyattville Road Boosters Plan Road Work Effort

A Hyattville delegation met Basin commissioners to request improvements on the Bonanza to Hyattville road, a key freight route. Hyattville boosters formed a club on April 2 with Joel Johnson as president and plan a Good Roads Day on April 7 with free meals and a dance at the hall to support road work and public involvement.

The U.S. Senate passed a resolution declaring a state of war with Germany. It authorizes the president to mobilize military and naval forces to wage war. House action set for tomorrow with debate at 10 o clock. Several senators voted no in a divided, sober session.

Major Cavender Seeks Local Pool Of Army Recruits

Major Cavender from Cody visited Basin to gather a list of unmarried men aged eighteen to thirty five eligible for service. He has spent much of the year on the border and expects Wyoming troops may be called up again. He believes the district will respond strongly and stands ready to aid in the national effort.

Mr and Mrs O W McNay and family returned last Friday after a seven week absence visiting several states and relatives. They report exceptionally severe winter in the east and advise residents to consider themselves fortunate.

Sherif Wickwire Delivers Three Prisoners From Rawlins

Sherif Wickwire returned from Rawlins Sunday with three prisoners. R. W. Zegler was sent to serve for robbing the Greybull laundry. R. W. McCraw was taken for stealing brass and metal from Greybull shops. Frank Pickett was transported for forging a check.

County Commissioners Inspect Kane Bridges For Repairs

The board of county commissioners visited Kane this week to assess bridges badly damaged by spring floods. They plan immediate repairs to restore safe passage and infrastructure.
