Riots Continue as Chicago Strikes Prompt Troop Request

Rioting and violence mount during the teamsters strike in Chicago with injuries and arrests. Charles Ryebling was attacked near Hub barn, his skull fractured. he collapsed at St John’s church steps. Sergeant Cummings was killed by a wagon driver later held on bail. Charles Beard, an bystander, died in the riot. Employers dispatched leaders to Springfield to seek state troops after declaring open rebellion in the streets.

London reports on May 4 that Russia may have acquired naval assets from Chile and Argentina via Charles Schwab and Charles Flint. Alleged purchases include three battleships and seven armored cruisers from Argentina. Separately in Duluth Minnesota a morning fire destroyed the Fifth Avenue Hotel, yielding three confirmed dead and two missing, with one recovered body identified as John Weiss.

Silver Wedding at Kasselman Home in Comanche

The Kasselman couple celebrated a silver wedding Tuesday at their Comanche township home. Over 100 guests attended, the house was decoratively arranged by their eldest daughter, and guests sent many silver gifts from Germany. Fire destroys Santa Fe tool house near depot

A small fire at about 7 p m Wednesday gutted the Santa Fe tool house two blocks east of the depot. The structure and contents were burned. The two hose carts and the chemical were on hand but only the chemical was used. The Gre-boys arrived as the building was nearly consumed.

Mayor Obtains Injunction Over Gas Franchise

In Kansas City Missouri on May 4 a temporary injunction returnable May 8 was secured by Isaac Kimbrell on behalf of the State. It stops the mayor and council from taking effect the thirty year natural gas franchise at thirty cents per thousand. The suit alleges the ordinance was fraudulently enacted and that the city cannot waive its option to purchase the gas plant. Hugh McGowan and others representing the gas company are named grantees. The franchise is valued at about fifteen million dollars to the grantees if granted.

Typhoon damages Russian ships near Amoy China

A May 4 dispatch from Amoy reports a typhoon on the south Chinese coast damaging Russian vessels. Two Nebigotoff ships reached port on Sumatra's north coast as relief efforts began amid the storm. In Missouri, Sedalia bankers offer a reward for Eugene Lewis the missing Middleton State Bank cashier tied to a fifty thousand dollar shortage.

Neighbors attended the Breck school house entertainment and ice cream social last Friday night. the house was crowded and a fine program given. A fish pond at one estate attracted attention. Aida and her pupils received compliments on their program.

Folkert hosted lively music by Garfield band. Hillman Matal sold two tanks. Geo Wilhelm and Pete Wilhelm joined merchants to watch a ball game in Bison. John Miner played.
