Sunday Burglary Report At Morgan Miller Firm Store

A Sunday incident notes a break in at Morgan and Miller produce trade where about $13 was taken from the till. Suspects include two white boys aged about 10 to 12 and a 13 year old colored youth who confessed to involvement with another boy named Wells.

Supreme court voids nuisance clause on joints law

The supreme court on Saturday overruled the prohibitory law clause allowing injunctions to close joints. The Hurrell act, passed two years ago, repealed the old nuisance provision. Wyandotte county Judge Fisher ruled the nuisance clause was repealed. the high court affirmed.

Prisoner from Hoisington in graft case

Hoisington constable brought A. P. Patterson to county jail after a continuance from Justice Hall's court. Patterson, labeled a tin hern grafter, is charged with obtaining $10 and returning $5 in change. Claflin butcher M. A. Douse is named as the graft operator. Patterson was captured at Hoisington.

Wreck on Great Bend and Scott lineNear Heizer

A mixed train derailed about 3 miles west of Heizer on the Great Bend and Scott branch Tuesday evening the 10th due to a soft track and rail spread. Nine cars left the track with no serious injuries though several boys sustained bruises. In town news, Jake Miller's Second Hand Store is a notable curiosity shop and Cozy Corner sits for rest. Tom Bain, formerly Great Bend schools principal now a Topeka attorney, visited town. Ben Hollingsworth traveled to Elk Walls for an aunt's funeral. Hoopers offers fine musical instruments including ocean organs. J McBee wed last week in Kingman county. Ladies of the M E Church to serve dinner on Republican convention day, April 2. Mrs E A Beeman has been restless this week.

Louie Frey 1844 1903 Beloved Great Bend Citizen Dies

After months of illness Louie Frey dies from stomach cancer at about 10 p.m. on March 1 1903. Born in Pennsylvania August 17 1844 he moved to Adams County Illinois in 1863 and married Kate Grubb January 25 1870. The Frey family settled near Great Bend in 1871. four children preceded him in death, one son and a devoted wife survive. A large crowd attended his funeral on March 9. he was a sober industrious and conscientious member of the community and a model citizen.

Great Bend Commercial Club Sets Plans for Outing and Gas Drilling

The Great Bend Commercial Club met Monday night to review gas and oil prospecting methods and costs. A drilling outfit could be bought for 2200 with daily drilling costs near 35 dollars. The group advanced plans for a congressional convention with 800 to 1000 visiting men, appointing a five member committee to organize accommodations and entertainment, and asking citizens to host visitors while hotels and restaurants anticipate feeding all.

Countywide Promotion Certificates for Next Year

Educational certificates will be issued to all county schools detailing the grade of work the pupil can perform next year. Each certificate will show the standing, may be based on tests or daily recitations, and must be kept by pupils for entry into the next school year.

Rural teachers need broader culture and higher pay

The Rural Teacher argues that rural instructors must possess wider culture since their role includes duties of multiple grade teachers. School boards should reward higher quality work. The county Teachers’ Meeting was postponed to March 21 with the same program. Common school examinations occur March 21 and 28 at Hoisington Ellinwood and Great Bend.
