Populist state ticket nominated at Topeka convention

In Topeka on July 5 the Populist state convention nominated a full state ticket with two supreme court justices and two railroad commissioner nominees missing. Officers named include Governor Hornen Andrew Keefer and Lt Governor J A Wright with other posts for Riley, Shawnee, Leavenworth, McPherson, and Clay counties. Geneva, Switzerland, reports Swiss inspection finds canned provisions imported from the United States all good despite some being nonstandard.

Wreck on Rock Island line at Maple Hill claims two lives

A Rock Island wreck near Maple Hill this morning killed Thomas Johnson and James Parsons both of Indian Territory, and injured two others, James Lewis and John Cobb of Ryan Texas. The stock train and a special watermelon train collided. the way car and five stock cars were demolished as confusion in orders is blamed.

Cholera in Manila Flare Dims After Week of Deaths

War department reports from Manila show 116 cholera cases and 99 deaths for the week ending yesterday with 29 cases and 23 deaths in the city in the last 24 hours. No American deaths in government service.

County fair prep and local social visits in Great Bend

Local Happenings note the county fair will be held the first week of August. Jack Lanter, formerly with Porter the druggist now in Chanute, Kansas, has been visiting Great Bend friends. A young society picnic on the Walnut produced a fine time and Clarence Aldrich reports enjoying himself.

Philippine Attorney General Willey Appointed Ex Court Judge

Washington reports the appointment of Attorney General Willey of the Philippines as the first United States Extra Territorial Judge. His district covers the seaboard provinces of China and part of Korea with headquarters at Shanghai. He will handle appeal cases from consular courts.

A Kansas City Journal special details boys in Barton and Rush counties forming a sleuthing band that helped convict Guy Connors for stealing 70 bushels of wheat from C Werkian’s farm warehouse in December 1905. The youths tailed Connors, hid along roads, and gave evidence leading to his conviction.

Czar Orders Investigation of Troop Disorders in St Petersburg

The Czar directs Grand Duke Nicholas to investigate and curb disorders among troops. He publicly dismissed the commander of the Best guard division, the colonel commanding the crack Preobrejensky regiment, and relieved Prince Vassilichisov from command of the guard corps. Stanley Torrey of the Lyons Eagle visited with Mrs Torrey and relatives.

Fire Retains Losses. Local Men Seek Insurance Coverage

Frank Eddingfield suffered a burned wheat stock with no insurance and arranged coverage for the remaining assets through Dennis & Boversteces. Marshal Wilson arrested two alleged craps shooters this afternoon. They are to appear before Police Judge Anthony for a six o'clock seance this evening.

Chicago July 5 death by own action of Frank Sullen to escape prosecution on a dozen charges. He tried to suffocate himself with fumes but family foiled him. Ellinwood excursion plans and town notes

People returning from Ellinwood celebrate travels by train. An excursion to Pecos alley is planned for July 17 with nine signed up, eleven spots open. Dennis and Soderstrom will take names. Thomas Haggard of Farmer City Illinois visited friends. Two tent shows, Rip Van Winkle and Jesse James, will parade with bands next Monday and strong advertising. Local fruit by C J Momyer impresses with currants plums and wild plants. A hotel mortars mishap caused a runaway near Morrison hotel, swinging along Broadway toward Main Street endangering shops.
