Cement Pipe Expansion At York Ranch In Harper Lake District

H O Nelson, superintendent, arranged with irrigation cement manufacturer H S Jay to install a mile and a quarter of 12 inch pipe at the York ranch. The district’s largest water reservoir sits there, with several thousand feet of pipe already installed by other contractors.

Barstow to Host Teachers Institute Sessions This Weekend

Barstow welcomes teachers from San Bernardino county and across state lines for the annual teachers institute. Thief enters Sprouse Reitz through front transom

The Sprouse Reitz Company on Main Street was broken into Saturday night with fifty dollars stolen. Manager J Underwood found the robbery at 11:30 Sunday morning. Entry was from the front via a broken transom, with two or three attackers suspected. The thief dropped into the store, took the cash from the flash night counter, then left through an unbolted back door. The night light was dropped near the exit. Underwood suspects local residents.

Teletype shifts move in Parker depot change

J C Vanderboof the telegrapher heads to Parker Arizona next week to take the second trick at the Santa Fe depot. Dan Halloran now works the third trick at Parker. Years ago both men were in the Barstow office but the Santa Fe teletype system displaced them. Halloran has stayed at Parker all summer while Vanderhoof returns after a 90 day layoff.

Cabinet maker loses finger in power saw accident

W. H. Brevin, who runs a cabinet shop on Third Street, lost a joint from his index finger and the thumb of his left hand in a saw accident. Dr Riley Shrum attended. The Blevins had spent the summer at the beach and had only recently returned to the shop when the incident occurred.

New Fire Siren Installed on White & Platt Building

A new siren for the fire department arrived and was tested Tuesday. Residents within a mile of White & Platt drug store need not be informed. The device ran on a five horsepower motor at 3600 RPM, with starting buttons in White & Platt and Bauer & Slaton garage.

Grammar School Opens With 3245 Enrolled

Barstow grammar school opened this Monday with 342 pupils and eleven teachers. New staff include Harry D. Briscoe as vice-principal teaching music and physical education. He previously led Yermo school as principal. Miss Collins and Miss Galumbus join as new instructors for Mexican grades. Principal B Floyd Lindsley returns, continuing departmental work from eighth to fourth grade.

Wrecked car reveals heavy liquor traffic

J W Covington and George Hallock were hospitalized after a crash west of Ludlow. It exposed a concealed liquor stash in a customized car compartment containing about 120 quarts of Old Taylor whiskey and champagne. Covington faced a hospital guard, while Hallock recovered. police traced the liquor to a Canadian origin via Juarez.

The Barstow Union High School began the new year on Monday September 14 with an assembly led by new principal Gordon Park. Enrollment reached 145 with mostly girls. six period day and new courses physics biology economics shorthand and domestic science.
