County Tax Increases Across Victorville Barstow and County

Tax rates rise across Victorville and Barstow for 1931-32. Barstow sees junior college tax up to 18 cents and lighting levies up, with total general levies reaching 5.72 dollars. Victorville reports a 59 cent overall increase driven by county and junior college taxes, with Needles district also higher. Assessed valuations cited: Victorville city and Needles city rising slightly.

Yermo Cafe Operator Plans Move After Tryout

Yermo E H Mathews who recently took over the Blue and White Cafe adjoining the Yermo post office went to Los Angeles the first of the week after his wife. He is trialing the cafe before moving his family to Yermo. Business has increased satisfactorily and Yermo is benefiting from McCray Company grants and local camp provision purchases. McCray holds a state highway contract exceeding a quarter of a million dollars between Yermo and the Nevada line.

Ford Twenty Millionth Car Arrives in Barstow

The Twenty Millionth Ford, symbolizing one man’s impact on world history and American industry, will visit Barstow en route from Detroit on a transcontinental tour. It arrives late Monday afternoon September 7, escorted to Barstow Garage for exhibition, with a free motion picture show planned. Judge L J Henderson and H L Miller lead the welcome committee and will sign the tour log book as officials arrive.

Teague to undergo surgery for varicose veins in LA hospital

R L Dick Teague, in Santa Fe, hospital in Los Angeles, was to be operated on this week for varicose veins. He also had an inflamed toe. Mrs Teague remains in Eagle Rock while he is confined in the hospital.

Congregational Church Seeks Pastor Candidate

Rev. Chester Ferris, former pastor of the Chula Vista church, will preach at the Congregational church on September 13 in morning and evening services. He will visit Barstow to consider settling as pastor. There will be no services next Sunday, September 6.

Robbery at Daggett Tent Targets Elderly Pensioner

WM Peel of Daggett aged about 65 reports a man around 25 to 30 visited his tent house Tuesday evening struck him on the head and robbed him of about 25 dollars. Peel, a former Texas ranger now on pension, described the assailant as 25, light-haired, wearing a blue serge suit. officers patrol for the thief as blood smeared his face.

Mrs Paul Arredondo Rites Held By Family In Barstow

Mrs Paul Arredondo died Tuesday at Hinkley at age over 85. Born in Gio Mexico she was a widow living with her son Jose Arredondo and his family. Two granddaughters who attended Barstow high school last year, White and Platt, helped with the funeral arrangements.

Barstow Post No. 2148 VFW met at the Rose Inn on Aug 25 with Commander Orville O. Jonas presiding. Richard E. The 20 30 Club met at the Beacon Cafe with President Carl Jordan in charge. Minstrel Committee chair Carl Groot announced progress on the September minstrel. a Friday meeting in Hotel Melrose lobby will include Dorse Fissel, Jack Pacina, Russell Cope, and Groot. Everett Williams recounted a Yellowstone trip via Washington, Oregon, and Utah. Stanley Wilson resigned as Daggett radio operator and was transferred to Albuquerque. Ogden Platt filled in for secretary Russell Cope, who attended the Long Beach Convention as a club delegate.

Striking an Officer Leaves Suspect Hospitalized

Officer Harris reports he ordered loafers out of town when Hall claimed to be going nowhere. Harris struck by Hall with a punch, then used the gun butt. Officer Poe transported the injured man to county hospital with a fractured skull.

San Bernardino Car Theft Suspect Captured Near Barstow

A Dodge Eight coupe owned by Mrs. Ruth Owen of San Bernardino was recovered after a tip from the sheriff. A nineteen year old, Jack Morley, was arrested on the highway with a car key, later admitting he stole the vehicle from Owen's San Bernardino driveway and was charged with grand theft.

Rains Flood Helendale Roads and Valley Towns

Heavy rains across the Mojave river valley flood Helendale crossings and halt traffic. A cloudburst between Victorville and Hesperia briefly washes out Santa Fe tracks. Victorville streets flood damaging several businesses, while nearby highways near Brisbane ranch stay blocked for hours. Local residents and crews, including Warren Smithson, work to restore the state highway over the coming month.
