Kiwanis Banquet Charter Night in Barstow

The Barstow Kiwanis Club held its Charter Banquet at the Harvey House with 75 Kiwanians attending. William Q. Harris presented the charter from Kiwanis International, accepted by Leon P. Whitney as Wayne Richards acted as toastmaster. Riverside and San Bernardino guests joined, and Leslie Henry of Pasadena delivered the principal address. The evening featured songs, a banjo solo, a movie-camera stunt, and audience Q&A. George Cunningham led the banquet committee to a successful event, with programs printed for each guest.

Nother Tourists Returns To Barstow To Invest

L. P. Haney a newcomer from San Joaquin county purchased 160 acres of the Stur nacle ranch in Barstow. He plans to plant 10 to 20 acres this fall and currently has five men clearing land. Haney previously camped in Barstow for a week, then toured Arizona and central California, finding Barstow unmatched for advantages and returning to become owner of the 160 acres.

Santa Fe fireman Joseph Mulcahy and family spent five days at Big Bear Valley camping near Al Mudgett cabin. He fished with minnows, catching trout from one to five and a half pounds and left a sample at the Printer office. Ducks scarce but big ones arriving. duck season starts Saturday. Whyman Moves Cleaning Business in Barstow Area

Harry Whyman relocates from the Henderson building to a residence beside Dr Bensons and north of the Tourist Garage. He recently bought a costly cleaning machine and plans a trip to Los Angeles for a new pressing unit, promising to deliver. He has built patronage and friendships during several months in Barstow.

Surprise Party For Bill Fisher In Needles

Mrs. W. H. Fisher hosted a surprise party for her husband Bill on an October evening at their Needles home. Guests enjoyed a dainty luncheon and a blue and yellow color scheme with a large cake bearing WHF initials and candles as the luncheon table centerpiece. Mr and Mrs William Tumblin and child were blocked by six horses on a road near Jensen corner. Tumblin swerved to the fence to avoid them and a horse struck the windshield, Glass shattered but occupants unharmed.

Indoor Baseball: All Stars Edge High School in 10 Inning Tilt

Eddie Cunningham's All Stars outlasted the High School team 7 to 6 after ten innings in a lively indoor baseball game at the high school grounds. Batteries were Davies and George Cunningham for the All Stars, and Dillingham and Burke for the High School. Bud Dillingham struck out 12, while Davies shut out the High School for eight innings before the decisive run in the 10th.

Body of Al Josselyn Found in Salt Marsh

Barstow prospector Tom Schofield located the body of Al Josselyn in the Salt Marsh district after a heat driven, nine mile pursuit following Joselyn's June departure to the Cockscomb range for rock samples. The search, started when Joselyn failed to return, covered about seventy miles total in extreme heat, with temperatures around 114 degrees.

Identified Body of Al Josslyn Found by Schofield

Deputy Coroner Emmett Waters and Tom Schofield named the body found by Schofield as Al Josslyn. Josslyn, identified by revolver, canteen, and personal effects, was located 21 miles from his car, in a natural position amid bushes after renewed search efforts. He had talked with Schofield before leaving.

Barstow Woman's Club Opens Meeting With Fund Drive

The Barstow Woman's Club held its opening meeting at the Antlers Club. President Mrs E L White presided as business matters included a vote to fund a box social to aid wiring for the county free library. Miss Wies, the county librarian, noted budget constraints. The club approved a $40 donation toward the wiring cost and set November 9 as Charity Day. A social and musical program followed with Mrs Louis Gleihe, Mrs W P Willett, Mrs A J Weld, Miss Pfau, and student Jordin Gleibe performing. Next meeting slated for October 26.

A large audience packed the Forum Theatre in Barstow last Sunday to hear the new pipe organ. Mrs Leahy gave the first public performance, and the instrument impressed by its quality, earning praise for the theater's management and their effort to please patrons at any cost.

Venetian festival ends at Grauman's Egyptian on Oct 24

Grauman's Egyptian theatre in Hollywood will present its final prologue titled A Venetian Festival featuring Old Venice scenery with John Barrymore in Don Juan. Gorsuch To Open Barstow Laundry Service

He will take over the Henderson cleaning shop on First Street and operate a laundry service connected with Colton’s Hub City Laundry while establishing a local operation. A pickup and delivery route will begin next week. negotiations continue for laundry equipment. The family plans to enroll their two children in Barstow schools after the Christmas holidays.
