Arthur Brisbane visits California on an East to West swing. He cites California as a world magnet, plans to buy more land after purchasing an alfalfa ranch near the Mojave sixty miles from the coast. He will return with his family and send two boys to school in the East.
The alfalfa here requires no fertilizer or lime. Roots penetrate eighteen feet into soil carried down from limestone mountains. Six to seven harvests per year can be achieved for fifteen to twenty years before replanting, with irrigation letting nature continue the cycle.
The note urges providing beehives for children and stresses a separate clean water supply for the bees to prevent swarms from fluttering into irrigation canals. It highlights alfalfa honey as superior and warns about potential irrigation disruption from bee activity.

Mr and Mrs O B Dotson of Turlock motored to Barstow Thursday of last week and were guests of Mrs John C McKinnon and Clinton. They later left for Los Angeles in Tuesday for a few days in Los Angeles and Pasadena.
Poole repairs and adds a garage and sidewalk at his residence on First Street. The Steinberg family occupies the house nearby. Last week, sidewalks and curb were installed in front of the Orr and Barstow Printeries adjoining Poole property.
Dr. and Mrs. A. C. Pratt attended the convention of the Pacific Coast League of Municipalities. Dr. Pratt served as a delegate of the State Health Department, a branch of the league, at the event.
Mr and Mrs G D Hutchison formerly of Barstow drove out last weekend. Mr Hutchison heads back to Los Angeles on Sunday while Mrs Hutchison stays in Barstow for a several week visit with Mr and Mrs C L Garver.
Doe Morrison spent last weekend with his family in Long Beach celebrating his wedding anniversary. He noted he has been married 24 years this Friday and called himself old fashioned for staying with the same wife all these years.
Local youths combed town dumping grounds collecting tin cans and pans. Inquiries revealed their aim was not scrap but to prepare for chivalrously courting Al Green.
Sudden temperature shift keeps coal man busy as frost is seen Tuesday morning by early risers. A steady downpour from Sunday and Monday caused no damage while rainstorms swept the desert from Barstow to the Grand Canyon.
Delegates from California Arizona and New Mexico meet at Wingman Arizona to organize the National Old Trails Traffic Association. Sam W Proctor named temporary chairman with an executive committee of nine to map routes promote the Old Trails highway and publish a guide detailing travel conditions and attractions. A new route plan trims 80 miles by routing Las Lunas Gallup to Holbrook via Springerville and Brook, with surfacing work planned on several segments.
Barstow P T A meets in the Auditorium for its first post summer session. A reception and dance for teachers is scheduled for Friday evening, October 16. Mrs E L White remains president and a new treasurer will be appointed later.
Sixty four freight and passenger trains were hand led in the Barstow yards on Saturday October 8th. The busy work indicates workers are kept constantly engaged with activity every minute.
Contractor G. H. Brown signed a contract Saturday for an $11,000 residence on First Street for the Barstow Printer and a residence. Work should be finished by December 1. Walls will be Wallroof Tile cement blocks.
The Interstate Telegraph Company has awarded a contract to C. T. Cleland for a small cement building on First Street opposite Barstow Printer. Local subscribers hope improved service after six months of poor townwide telegraph and telephone coverage.
Christy Mathewson famed as Big Six of baseball and Boston Braves owner died at 11 p.m. in Saranac Lake New York from tuberculosis pneumonia. He had been in good condition days earlier and his wife stayed at his bedside. their son Christy Mathewson Jr. was at college.
