In Randsburg October weather, residents rail against a Los Angeles Times telegram claiming seven gold and silver strikes in the Rand mining district. The tale prompts denials from local figures, warnings against sensational reports, and notes on new Anderson stage service and a Studebaker agency expansion.
The writer notes most time spent refuting fake telegrams sent September 26 to the metropolitan press. They lacked exact information and names, mis营销 portraying mining milestones as boom stories to mislead the public, drawing criticism from brokers and miners alike.
Fraudulent stories circulated by Los Angeles papers and an extra have harmed Randsburg and the Rand mining district. “Mizpah Montana” with $100,000 ore value and other booms like the big boom and seven strike fake are cited. Local businessmen urge vigilance against counterfeit journalism and warn of wolves in sheep’s clothing.
In an early era of the Yellow Astor, Singleton aimed to create the impression that the Yellow Astor was the sole mine in the district. He claimed other properties were discredited, stating if they had value he would buy them outright, insisting only one mine in the district is owned. Alfred Harrell's policy continues.
The Rand district gains its first bank to be called the First Bank of Johannesburg with a new stucco front building. Directors and officers are being decided, with BR. T. F. Smith likely president and Paul T. Rateliff poised to be cashier. Aimed deposits near 100000 within a year.
Rand District personals describe Francis X Moore expanding as a local accountant, Jack Gaylord taking charge of Johannes burg Garage mechanical work, and E J Burton surveying terms for a 500 foot shaft on South Bend ground. Johannes burg Lumber Co expands with large desert lumberyard and Mojave shipment. Mrs. Taylor named postmistress at Randsburg, Mrs. Montgomery retires. Tom Royal returns to the Palace stockpiling winter stationery. Ben Hur stock price movement noted, with an expectation of $1 before Christmas attracting local fans.
The Randburg area reports a infant death in Bakersfield, mining firms secure credit and control moves, Mrs. Goodrich tours Fresno by auto, and Belcher Extension Lease progress. New Commercial Hotel planned in Rand, with building materials from Johannesburg Lumber Co. Bakersfield lodge to host circus and mardi gras events in October 2026, with Elk charity drives noted and Randsburg participation invited.
Supervisor C. B Crain and County officials Hain and Cole visited the district to inspect the proposed Barstow to Victorville paved highway. After securing rights of way the construction contract will be let and work will begin from the Barstow end. Tom Williams and Yermo delegates argued that their road to the east would shorten the Salt Lake run by 75 miles.
Clyde Brite reports scarce mining in Tebachapi while lime quarries and a cement plant remain in operation. A steady two monthly pay roll sustains the district as Brite lauds the Barstow Printer as the best paper of its size for mining and general news.
A correction states Frank Shearer leased the Waterman mine, not Geo Parks, with Mrs Weedman and her sister Miss Helen Laveen of San Francisco. Weekend movers plan to Bakerfield around November first and Liberty Theatre will show pictures Tuesday and Saturday evenings. Christian Science services move to Sundays at 11 a.m. in Liberty Theatre. Everyone welcome.
Chas L. Topping and E J Lawton plan development of the Brady and Hamton group four miles east of Barstow. Assays from silver ore show from 10 to 200 ounces per ton, report furnished to the Printer by C G Tailleur and Geo P Brady, former owners who were in town Saturday from Randsburg.
P. J. Osdick of Osdick California gave the town’s first newborn a $500 gift to be deposited at 4 percent interest and not withdrawn until age 21. The baby’s parents are Mr and Mrs John Gordon. Also noted: E L Blank and Walter Sodaburg of the Randsburg Silver Mining Co visited camp, Mr and Mrs A W Mason spent the weekend there, and a healthy eight pound girl arrived for Mr and Mrs A A Richie of Randsbury.
Mr and Mrs Marion Brooks camp in the New York Mountains for a spell. Needles residents ride out Sundays to seek cool air and recreation nearby. Mr and Mrs Walter Ordway drove to Fenner last Sunday to visit Mr and Mrs Sid Dennis. C F Springer visited Needles on Tuesday. R M Imel begins work at the Goffs Garage.
Mrs Cutts recently arrived from Los Angeles and reports a splendid time in the city, enjoying the experiences and sights encountered during her stay.
