Henry Ford toured Barstow en route east and expressed interest in the Desert Empire project. He was shown Mojave river reclamation plans and Barstow’s mineral resources including iron ore and potential oil and electricity. Ford asked for The Barstow Printer and a Mojave River and Valleys Improvement Association letter to be sent to him. Dr. McDonald of Globe Toronto accompanied the party and also requested a copy of The Printer.

Desert Empire Gains Wealthy Settlers From Cities
Mrs. W Poole reports Miss Minnie Irwin a retired Chicago teacher has bought 320 acres near Newberry to settle on a wealth producing ranch in the Desert Empire. Mr McKee of Adams McKee Hardware Los Angeles bought eighty acres in Victor Valley. Mr Patten bought 160 acres.
Santa Fe Rail Traffic Increases at Barstow and Mojave
Division Superintendent Christie visited Barstow on Sunday and Monday then proceeded to Mojave Monday afternoon. No wrecks were reported in July and August. To offset the Panama Canal closure the Santa Fe dispatched seven extra freight crews east to Needles and added two extra passenger trains. Efforts are underway to handle a ten percent rise in activity as Barstow yards become busier.

Miner Struck by Train in Utah, One Leg Amputated
M. Robinson, a miner from Bingham, Utah, was hit by a freighter near Sands and Jean and pulled onto the Salt Lake Limited. He arrived at Yerma with a severed leg, received Dr. McKenzie’s care, and was transported to a Los Angeles hospital. The engineer halted after seeing him by the track. the man was too weak to explain the accident.
