Barstow hosts a Chautauqua week with the Mojave River Valley Famous Orchestra for a Saturday show and a dance to raise funds. Proceeds help cover artist expenses and the Boy Scouts building fund, with surplus aiding the local hospital and other civic projects.
Five lively performers presented a versatile program at Chautauqua led by Wendell Wise. The Music Box Girls combined instrumental music with singing and dancing, featuring marimbaphone, cello, banjo and saxophone acts plus distinctive costumes and harmony numbers from Margaret Meer Winifred Meer Hazel Pearson and Carolyn Thorp. The program promises popular semi classical and classical selections with novelty pieces and vocal solos.
W S Fruit of the Hinkley district married Joldie Merkins a Los Angeles nurse on May 15 in San Bernardino. The bride from New York stayed in Los Angeles recently before settling at the El Rubaiyat ranch. Fruit homesteaded after the Kramer district gold rush and plans alfalfa on ten acres. they now reside at their new home.
Colton Pacific Fruit Express will visit Barstow Sunday to play a baseball game against local boys. The visitors are reported to be very good and manager Tom Brook looks for an evenly matched contest.
Mrs J A Evans shows very favorable progress at the Santa Ve horse event, with observers noting steady improvement and strong performance in recent training sessions.
Ben Thompson, about thirty five, a worker on a well rig at the Fred Yeary place ten miles north of Hinkley, shot himself in the stomach with a 45 Colt while the dogs barked at night. The accident occurred between eight and nine o'clock. he was taken to Barstow and then to the San Bernardino hospital, in a low condition. Thompson's home is Hemet.
Citizens of Yermo hosted a Monday night celebration for the Southern Sierras Power Company entering their town. The event at the Yermo Athletic and Amusement Club featured a large program with musical numbers by Beauchamin and Lane, recitations by Morley, readings by Hannifan, talks by company executives, and remarks by C. S. Crain and Leon Heseman.
Mrs I FE Alego hosted twenty six children for Lasky's natal day with games and a paper donkey pin activity. Refreshments were served. The party notes an upcoming move after school ends with Mr Algeo, a Standard Oil mechanic, already working in a new territory in Las Vegas.
A Barstow visit to Las Vegas Kiwanis events highlighted by personal service from two Las Vegas Kiwanians. The Barstow group traveled in Whitlow’s car, faced car trouble and a hail storm, and were aided by locals including Dad Fairbanks. The Las Vegas hosts, Gene Ward and W G Fulton, organized the inter-club gathering and arranged a return to Barstow after a long 380 mile drive, underscoring the meaning of service within Kiwanis.
N B Brown formerly Santa Fe cashier at Barstow joins the Pickwick Stage Co. in Los Angeles. Mr and Mrs La Marsh return from a two day auto trip visiting San Fernando, Topanga canyon, the coast and Long Beach. Mr and Mrs Van Aman celebrate the birth of a son, Albert Voorhees Van Aman Jr., eight pounds, at Dr. Andersons. mother and child prosper.
After dining, several local boys left the Harvey House by a wash room window instead of the cashier’s desk. Ed Harris retaliated in humor by offering them a free room at his rooming house.
