The Clean-Up a political comedy opening Chautauqua week features wife running for mayor against her husband’s wishes. Robert Pollard and Cleone Pollard headline a strong cast in a satire of ward bosses bankers and society women with a happy ending. Smilin’ Thru closes the week with a classic love story.
Barstow residents urged to back a bonded sanitary district to finance sewerage disposal for new hotels and large businesses. The note stresses widening First Street, curbs and sidewalks, and a city-wide boost to attract development, led by E. L. White of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Hinkley Chamber of Commerce gathering reported strong signatures for a Rural Free Delivery route from Barstow to Hinkley to Hodge and return, with only four signatures in Hinkley and two in Barstow O District not signed. Many at home were not solicited, and 20 to 30 more signatures could have been obtained. Traffic from Bakersfield to Las Vegas may be routed via Los Angeles rather than Mojave and Barstow, affecting district routing eastward through Los Angeles. Cards and refreshments followed.
James W. Morrison of Yermo died from internal hemorrhages after a Ford roadster rolled over on a curve when sand at the roadside was struck. A young woman passenger survived. Morrison, 19, employed by Union Pacific, lived in Yermo five years and was well known in desert communities. Funeral services were arranged by White and Platt. Interment in Riverside planned for Wednesday.
The Barstow Parent-Teacher Association elected Mrs. Harry Kelly President and filled key posts including Vice-President Mrs. Kelly, Secretary Mrs. M. A. Beimer, Treasurer Mrs. E. L. White, Historian Mrs. John Benson, and Auditor Mrs. A. V. Van Aman. Carnival proceeds around 350.00 will fund Boy Scouts Building Fund. A delegate and alternate were chosen for the State PTA convention in Sacramento with Mrs. Fred Hart as delegate and Mrs. Harry Kelly as alternate.
Turkeys raised across the mountain area now number about 40 000 with Adelanto Apple Valley Lucern Valley Mojave River Valley and Newberry districts contributing. The industry shows strong gains as farmers report year round demand in Los Angeles County and hotels and restaurants feature turkey menus beyond holidays. A pool of large raisers aims for top market prices while Barstow visitors Molby Potter and Shelton tour Pomona turkey operations and adjacent Daggett property.
The High School Trustees met Tuesday evening and elected Chas Garver president with Leon I Whitney kept as clerk. New member Mrs Northup from Daggett welcomed. bus transportation from Ludlow discussed with potential routes to Ludlow Daggett Minneola Yerma and Daggett service.
Enrollment grows to over 300 as three or four of the current grammar school staff plan to return next year. Officials expect to hire eleven teachers for the upcoming term to handle the increased enrollment.
Herman Jones has been seriously ill the past week. About one o'clock Wednesday morning the fire alarm roused the citizens to protect their property. Fire was discovered in the basement of Jimmie McKinley's pool hall by George Vick and family. The pool hall is adjoining the restaurant and is owned by Vick. The blaze was confined to the basement but considerable damage was done by water and smoke. The origin of the blaze is not known. Last year the Vick family saved the block by their timely discovery of fire in the Hub store and Forum Theatre.
Hob Clothing manager Mr. Lando signs a local advertising contract and plans to attract district shoppers who have been leaving town. He surveys trade volume and argues Barstow can regain customers with better merchandise and fair prices. The Hub store advertises on the back page and promises future notices.
Barstow and the Mojave River Valley are set to share in a wave of multi million dollar improvements across Southern California. Projects include the Boulder Dam program, transcontinental telephone work, a three year Los Angeles water and power buildout, a $30,000 Barstow water plant upgrade, new highway viaducts, Highway Communities on Main Street, and elevated light houses tied to a large oil company plan. Sub stations, extended telephone lines, and doubled subscribers mark ongoing growth as journals list hundreds of millions in coast wide construction and hundreds more in regional and state projects.
FE. D. Evensen opened his grocery in a new First Street location and reported more customers than ever before after Saturday. He plans to match chain store prices to boost home dollars. The feed and grain section was partitioned with folding doors for an open entrance. C. Fitch rented the south half for a meat market and moved from Los Angeles with his family, reporting brisk trade on opening day.
On May 1st Mrs Ed Pitcher celebrated her 33rd year on the desert most time in Barstow. Six years after arriving from Kansas she married Ed Pitcher a husky driver for Death Valley Borax. The couple have taken active part in desert affairs and have accumulated about 100000 dollars of property in Big Bear Los Angeles and Barstow. They plan to spend the summer at their cottage in Big Bear valley.
Barstow native Charles C. Topping, a UC senior in Letters and Science, was named a member of the arrangements committee for the annual high school journalistic convention. He resides at 2709 Channing Way, Berkeley, as Sigma Delta Chi sponsors the event held April 18 and 19.
George DeLong, sailor on the U S S Mullany, left Friday for San Diego after a two week visit with his fiancee Miss Eleanor Redman. Eleanor plans to join him around June 1 to become Mrs DeLong and they will establish their home in San Diego.
The Ord mountain district grows with a forty stamp mill planned by La Fontain at the Ord Belt claims and aimed for three months of operation. Joe Galliard is installing it as thirty men work, tunneling a thousand feet, eighteen miles south of Daggett in the Mojave Valley.
The church observes Mothers Day on May 12 with a sermon and special music. Sunday school begins 9:30 a.m. with preaching at 10:45 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Junior to Senior C E meet at 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Rev McRae and others attend the Southern California Congregational Conference in Pasadena May 13 to 15. Five new members were received last Sunday after the Lord's Supper.
James Holloway Jr of Hesperia, with his aunt Kate Jefferson and sister, leaves Saturday for Louisville Kentucky. They will stop in Salt Lake City and other cities en route to New York. The party plans a about three and a half months away. The ladies spend winters in Hollywood and their chauffeur will drive them home. James is the son of Deputy Assessor Holloway.
