When Wages Were Ten Dollars a Month in 1804
An Oneida county, New York, account book kept by Jeremiah Steves shows frugal prices. Road work paid 39 cents daily, beef 2.72 for sixty eight pounds, eggs 37.5 cents a dozen, apples 75 cents for two bushels, corn 80 cents for two bushels, rye 6 cents a bushel. A sow and litter valued at 2.80, chicken 12.5 cents, candy 19 cents per half pound. Liquor bought for the poor with quarts of whiskey 28 cents, rum 23 cents, wine 60 to 49 cents.
