Within ten days a diamond drill will be installed on the Sanderson and Dignowitty claims adjoining the Coyote claim to the east. An exhaustive test of the claims will determine ore body trend and extent as far as possible. Superintendent Jamieson of the district oversees the program.

Hampion Williams, an early Welly mine discoverer, explored Calico field with hopes of attracting miner interest. Gen. F. G. Downey, and M Schwab the steel king, with oil geologists N. B. Lawson and F. E. Homer, studied the Daggett district as oil activity grows. A rig may be built within 60 days if claims hold. Cyanide plant delayed by freight, Henry Brite stays in Daggett, S. F. Nevada points. G. P. Salm praised the field. Mrs. H. C. Ryersons family vacationing in Canada and New York. H. Wolfe left Daggett for Los Angeles to marry, Buell from Needles steps in. Cowboys from the Daggett ranch created Sunday excitement.

July 7 Celebration at Hinkley on Mojave River

Plans are under way for a July 7 celebration on the Mojave River bank near Hill ranch. Sam P. Coy, president of the Colton Chamber of Commerce, will speak. Locals enjoy the Hill ranch swimming pool, now popular enough to inspire bathing suit advertisements by a local merchant.

An unsigned Helendale California note invites ranchmen and cattlemen to a June 23 meeting at the Helendale school house. The Farm Bureau plans a conference to forge an amicable fencing agreement between field and range and urges all interested parties to attend and speak up.

Kelly mine dispute delays shaft sinking and ore shipment

The Kelley mine faced ejectment threats from Mr. Dignowitty if development began, but no ejectment actions have occurred yet. Due to missing electrical parts, sinking the Coyote shaft below 118 feet started at 8 p m Saturday June 11, with De Grave aiming to finish 400 feet quickly using large, modern machinery and skilled crews. Nineteen cars of high grade ore were shipped the week ending June 11, ten from the Sill Grady lease and nine from the Kelly mine, with Sill Grady ore said to have higher values than Kelly mine ore. Grady lease is Bonanza class.

Barstow Businesses Ravaged by Weekend Firestorm

Barstow suffered two major fires last Saturday. The West Barstow home of George Parks burned early, lightly injuring Mrs. Parks, then a large blaze struck the business district behind McRae and Dillingham. Firemen fought four hours as buildings including White Drug Store, Melrose Hotel, City Meat Market, Nicholson’s Grocery, Barstow Hotel rooms, and several shops burned or endured heavy water damage. The White Drug Store faced the largest loss with about 12,000 in stock, 4,000 in insurance, while the post office operated from a temporary space. The Melrose Hotel was a total loss except for some furnishings. most owners faced substantial damage and several planned rebuilds are set for after cleanup.

Children’s Day Observed by Barstow Congregational Church

A Barstow Congregational Church service observed Children’s Day with Mrs H B Thomas class excelling under their teacher. The last summer communion service, led by the pastor with Grover and McMullen assisting, attracted wide memory. Plans for a fall parsonage drew 200 300 dollars in local support as a conference aid. Resolutions to Washington denounced war preps and armament spending. Japanese services followed with Rev M Tauji from Pasadena presenting sermons and a motion picture.
