Barstow Merchant Tom Smuin Dies After Illness

Tom Smuin, Barstow merchant and head of Smuin Grocery Co, died Monday morning. Funeral services were held at Barstow Auditorium with Rev. Isaac McRae delivering the sermon. His body shipped to Rexburg Idaho to rest beside his mother, accompanied by his wife and three children Maxine Etta and Betty. He leaves a father John Smuin, brother George Smuin, and a large Barstow family. Smuin Grocery Co. recently saw management changes with E D Evenson taking over, while Mrs Smuin retains her late husband’s interest.

Cattle and Alfalfa Prosper in Mojave River Valley

The Mojave River Valley sees cattle dairies and alfalfa tied to wealth. At Stephens ranch near Hodge 100 acres of alfalfa yield seven to nine tons per acre yearly, selling around 22 dollars per ton. Grapes ripen earlier than elsewhere in the state, usually a week or two ahead.

All Year Road to Yosemite Valley Opens July 31

Harvey M. Toy, chair of the California Highway Commission, announces the all year road from Merced to Yosemite Valley will open on July 31 and stay open year round. Governor Richardson set the date. some bridges may remain unfinished but will not hinder travel. Toy describes a testing trip from Merced to Yosemite and back, with stops at Mariposa Court House and South Fork prison camp.

Hodge Bros Ranch Alfalfa Farm West of Barstow

Hodge Bros water, judgement, and industry shaped their home and alfalfa ranch on the National Old Trail highway west of Barstow. They operate a large cement reservoir fed by an electric pump lifting water to an irrigation tank. water level varies little. They harvest about 17 acres of alfalfa with nine tons per acre average and have more ground prepped for seeding this fall. A baler helps conserve moisture and leaves.

George Cunningham and his son left for Kansas City and Oklahoma by auto for a month’s absence from Barstow. Mrs. Cunningham and son Jerry visiting Oklahoma will drive home. Tom Sullivan traded his Ford for a Buick with a $15 cash difference after a $10 difference was asked by the tourist. Tom notes the Buick’s qualities remain to be seen.

State Has Helped Old Trails Route

Nelson T. Edwards outlines California Highway Commission efforts in 1923 24 to fast track interstate links to Southern California. The Old Trails Highway saw maintenance from November 1923, with significant work between Hector Ludlow Victorville Daggett and Needles, aiming 200 miles improved by end of 1926. New Arrowhead Trail maintenance began October 1925 linking to Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, with gradual gains and ongoing projects.

Brooke Ranch expands with alfalfa and orchard crops at Hodge

F M Brooke now owns and cultivates the Emerson ranch at Hodge. He harvests 22 acres of alfalfa and crops including apples pears peaches almonds apricots and grapes. Born in Daggett Postmaster Brooke values water and shade trees. Alfalfa yields seven to eight tons per acre seasonally. His shady home sits along the National Highway west of Barstow where the new route passes the alfalfa field.

Open Air Dance Proposed for Barstow Saturdays

Several hundred residents gathered as Barstow lit street lamps for the night’s event held on the high school tennis court. Organizers propose making the open air dance a regular Saturday summer attraction to draw big crowds and boost business, inviting input from business leaders and locals.

Body of Peters Found on Desert

Keith Peters, a Long Beach bond salesman who vanished June 1 after overnighting in Barstow, was found in a sanded desert area near Death Valley Junction. Investigators noted his car was stuck, water and fuel intact, no foul play evident, and an inquest scheduled in San Bernardino.

Highway Contract Completed by MacVicar on Hicks-Barstow-Daggett Route

Supt George F B MacVicar completed the 18 mile Hicks Barstow Daggett grading contract for 158928 dollars. The work is praised though clay binder blows off. Oil will be used for surface finish. MacVicar will bid next on a San Diego county road section.

Strontianite Shipment Ordered for Experiments

Henderson and Nicklin received an order from San Francisco for several tons of strontianite. It is described as the highest grade in the United States for experimental use. A concentrator at Barstow is mentioned as the dream of the discoverers.
