Emigrant Trek Through Death Valley to California 1849
A large wagon train of emigrants left Utah in late 1849 bound for San Bernardino via the Spanish Trail. divided into parties, they faced a winter trek through a barren Mojave desert, crossing Death Valley to reach the San Fernando Valley and later the Kern River and San Joaquin valley. Manley and others endured shipwrecked canoes, hostile guides, scarce water, and starving oxen before reaching Furnace Creek and Death Valley, chronicling a perilous journey with Chief Walker aiding survival.
