The San Gabriel Valley plans a grand display for the Ninth National Orange Show in San Bernardino from February 14 to 23. A golden fruit bowl centerpiece with a revolving fountain and three supporting statues will highlight the exhibit, lit by indirect lighting. Ellen Beach Yaw will sing on San Gabriel Valley Day.

New York January 28 Actual shipments have been made of meats dried by a process devised by Dr. K C Falk and Dr E M Frangel at Roosevelt Hospital and refined at Columbia University The initial batch totaled 300 pounds sent to a southern military camp Soldiers tasted the meat and found it indistinguishable from fresh meat Dr Ralph H McKee of Columbia explained the method uses vacuum and low temperature to remove water without altering albumen or chemistry The dried meat can be preserved indefinitely and rehydrated to its original weight and condition

Sacramento announces plans to enlarge the city rice mill, doubling capacity from 600 sacks to 1200 sacks, making it the largest mill in the world for the coming season.
A January 24 1919 banquet at Barstow Union High School celebrated the opening of the new building. Students performed stunts and music from a Jazz Orchestra while a bustling dining room showcased a lively clean up. Basketball captains were elected Byron Hill led the team with practice noted and Miss Verda Haws returned to Barstow. The night school for foreigners at the high school drew about twenty four attendees with lessons in English arithmetic and typewriting. Also included is a puff pastry recipe and cream filling directions.
