William R. Ford secretary treasurer of the Sun Set Inns Co and associates are at the Drumm Hotel Barstow making preliminary arrangements for the construction of the hotel and inn camp and service station in east Barstow Building will begin at an early date surveyors are preparing the grounds for the construction crew.
Allied Contractors Inc. completed paving from ten miles east of the Cliff House at Newberry to eight miles west of Ludlow under Resident Engineer G E Mialkson. New Mexico Construction Co. holds a contract for forty one miles from eight miles west of Ludlow to about three miles east of Amboy with 145 workers and heavy equipment. They have begun a mixing plant and expect pavement laying before summer. Material for a new floor in the Community hall has been ordered.
Dave Morgan, age 64, manager of the Zenda mine at Calico, died in Los Angeles after gallstone surgery and was buried January 15. He built the Zenda project through water flood hurdles and supported by stockholders and his assistant Superintendent Jackson, with Morgan’s long mining and political background noted. Virgin ia Morgan, his daughter, attends college as his widow mourns.
Ed Harris resigns after twenty years as Special Officer with Santa Fe. He says Barstow’s growth lets him devote more time to the people who elected him to the township office, and he will serve Barstow citizens day and night.
Reported flood risk grows as Mojave river level climbs seven feet at Victorville with more rain forecast. Warnings say Barstow could see flood conditions if storms persist.
Virgie McLarney leaves next week for a few days visit in Los Angeles. Fred Kelly, father of P. F. Jordan's sister in law, died in Rossland B C Monday night of old age. Winn left for Amarillo Texas for two weeks vacation with his father and brothers. Bernard Lawrence is relieving Mr Winn at the Harvey House office. Mrs M A Beimer and Lawrence were San Bernardino visitors Sunday. The Jolly-Right Bridge Club meets at Mrs C E Williams tonight. Mr Hatfield Harvey House general manager visited Barstow Tuesday with Mr Harvey. Floyd Tripp of Whipple Bar racks Arizona visited his wife and mother last weekend. Murray Tripp and family from Winslow Arizona are visiting their father and mother here. George Kunzier of the Dageett Inspection station bought a new green Ford roadster from Barstow Garage this week. Harry Davis meteorologist at TAT Maddux Airlines is to be transferred to Kingman Arizona Sunday. Mr Davis has been in Barstow the past year and is liked by all who knew him. Mr and Mrs L B Viernan left Los Angeles last Saturday January 11 with about 135 other California Editors Association members to tour old Mexico. They expect to be gone about seventeen days five of which will be spent in Mexico City.
Mrs. Harry Kelly president of the P I A announces a Fifth district PTA meeting at Colton on January 17 starting at 10 a m in the Jewel Methodist Church at 8th and G streets. Dr. Regina Wesecote will speak in the morning on Big Business of Home Making and A R Clifton of Monrovia in the afternoon on Thrift and Conservation.
The Woman's Club held its regular meeting Tuesday afternoon at the Boy Scout's building. Mrs. Wicker spoke on law enforcement and the program featured music by the Misses Sischo.
Judge Henderson's court has been a very busy place this week dealing out justice to evil doers. Many of them were old time sinners.
Mrs B F Gauldin entertained her bridge club on Wednesday afternoon serving a two course luncheon at 1 30 then the ladies played bridge with Mrs Gauldin receiving the prize for high score.
A baby girl arrived Monday afternoon January 13 at Dr McCorkle's hospital in Victorville to Mr and Mrs Henry Hayes. Both mother and child are reported to be doing well. The mother is Myrtle Meek before marriage.
Barstow Finance and Investment Corp elected Julien W. Smith as president, W. F. Bauer as vice president, and E. D. Evenson as secretary treasurer at the January 8 1930 stockholders meeting. Established in Barstow in 1926, the home owner company formerly engaged in insurance and automobile paper financing and plans to expand to other good commercial paper. The 1929 reports show growth and a 100 percent stock dividend was declared for holders on Dec 31 1929.
Reports from East West North and South of Barstow describe snowfalls from six inches to six feet. The moisture promises ample water for stock and crops in the Mojave river valley, predicting a fine display of desert flowers and large alfalfa crops. Cattle will have plenty of feed in coming spring and summer.
Mr and Mrs M A Belmer and son Lawrence entertained Grammar and four High school teachers to a tamale supper Monday night. Supper was on card tables followed by Cootie. High score went to Miss Wickler who received a two tone yellow petal pillow. Prizes included bath salts orchid tinted writing paper and a red hand painted handkerchief. Men’s high honors went to Mr Pierce. They closed with songs.
Mrs. V. E. Weithoff hosted sixteen guests Monday evening January 18 in honor of her husband’s birthday. Four board tables provided dinner lit by pink tapers as the group enjoyed games. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Garver, Mr. and Mrs. Knaggs, Mr. and Mrs. Weld, Mr. and Mrs. Deskins, Mr. and Mrs. Benson, Mr. and Mrs. Rice, Miss Nola Williamson, and Mrs. Joseph Williams.
Barstow High School trustees held a dinner meeting with Miss Ida Collins and Mrs Gladys Potter present to discuss needed additions as enrollment rose from 100 in 1918 to 136, with forecasts of 150. Helen Heffernan noted overcrowded rooms, lack of auditorium, and long student transports up to 53 miles to Ludlow.
Charley Garver spoke at the Rose Inn meeting of the 20-30 Club in Barstow. He cited U S schooling figures and costs, noted Barstow High School growth since 1918, praised the club’s west coast reach, and announced the anniversary dance set for February 14.
Fred J. Goellner of Southern Sierras Power Company extends service eastward along the Mojave River between Barstow and Daggett. Farmers Harland Chilson Foote Galloway Gibbs Duncan Spring and others adopt the service on fertile lands with abundant water for alfalfa crops. Local power company praised for liberal expenditures as Boulder Dam completion hoped.
The Barstow Branch of the San Bernardino Valley Bank reports a substantial two year rise in deposits totaling $74,291.51 and more than 200 more depositors on record, signaling local business growth.
Barstow reported two distinct earthquake shocks around 4 30 PM with no damage locally. A heavy earth slide blocked the new highway summit and reports say a large building in San Bernardino was damaged.
