VY. S. Wilhelm Western Pacific Oil Company field manager reports near Manix east of Yermo drill down 2467 feet Saturday found oil sand, by Monday 2585 feet with drilling ongoing. Sandstone shows comanche white lime with marine formation. water shut off. Drilling pushed hard, foreseeing a pig producer on the desert soon.
Students from across southern California gather at the University of Southern California for the third annual newspaper convention. About 200 high school editors and managers attend as Pi Delta Epsilon Sigma and Alpha Chi host and supervise registration lunch and a dance.
Harper Lake residents hosted a masquerade at Miss Clayton’s home with amusing costumes including a moon over Harper Lake and a clown. Vasper Thatcher toured to Los Angeles on business, assisted by Howard Poneroy. Mr Hills fish bake drew a small crowd and a fish fry followed at Collins place. Mr Plum’s death noted. H Bullock returned from Hinkley after caregiving. Miss Lina Myes is recovering and a well is being drilled east of Mr Spankers property by Fred Yeary and Spankers.
Mrs Palmer notes thirty attendees at the Sunday service. A young peoples' society is to be organized at the schoolhouse at six o'clock next Sunday evening with Mrs Akins directing the work. Dr. Morrison is welcomed back as a guest.
San Bernardino and Colton representatives met in San Bernardino to form committees to gauge public opinion on a proposed merger. Business leaders supported consolidation after debate over the location of a new courthouse. The merged city would be a leading Southern California center with about 45 000 residents.
The Cunningham brothers owners of Cunningham Pharmacy have taken a ten years lease on a store room in the new building being erected by Messrs Bauer and Slaton on the highway.
A. A. Sproule bought 320 acres of the Wiarner ranch near Hinkley. A. Speth sent a carload of hay from his Hinkley ranch to Los Angeles this week. Mrs. J. A. Hahink of Hinkley is on the sick list this week.
San Francisco announces another flour price increase. A 49 pound sack now priced at 3.13 dollars. William Foley, secretary of the Master Bakers Association, says baker's bread prices will not be affected.
E. L. Stanfield, proprietor of Stanfield's Camp at Big Bear, says over a hundred skaters were on the lake last Sunday, after arriving in town from Big Bear Valley this Thursday.
Time limits on dictionaries spread across California libraries to ease crowds of crossword puzzle fans. Surveyors work to set grade stakes along the highway in front of Williams addition as development starts on the proposed Dillingham new business block opposite the high school. The Iowa, the Trindisans and the North Dakotans are each called for picnics in Los Angeles on January 24.
New fire plugs have been set along the highway at Williams addition and connected with the main lines from Reservoir Hill, improving water supply access for fire protection in the area.
A 10 ton Holt caterpillar and level ing grader was unloaded in the freight yards this week to aid the highway construction project.
W A Knaggs arrived on the 21st to assume the freight cashier role in the local Santa Fe office, transferring from Kingman where he held a similar position with the company.
Joe Stehlik of Osdick travels to San Bernardino on Monday to attend court as an interested party in a mining suit and plans to visit his family in Anaheim afterward.
The Rt Rev Bishop will administer confirmations at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Barstow on Sunday March 8, Ludlow on Monday March 9, Blythe on Tuesday March 10, and Oro Grande on Wednesday March 11. Parishioners wishing to be confirmed should register at the Rectory and attend Confirmation Class each Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St Josephs Church.
The National Orange Show will hold its fifteenth event February 19 to March 1, 1925 in a new permanent San Bernardino venue. The 700 by 135 foot structure features a timber dome roof, reinforced walls, two main exhibit halls, education and by products departments, and extensive amenities including offices, a cafeteria, dance hall, rest rooms, and information desk. The $125000 building is designed to resemble a small city with a seven day citrus expo and industrial displays.
Auto checkers counted 106,200 cars entering Southern California via five routes last year, carrying at least 318,600 people. Old Trail Santa Fe led with 31,400 vehicles, Lincoln Highway 16,700, Pacific Highway 39,500, Ocean to Ocean 8,000, and Blythe route 9,800. Travel could double if the Old Trail from Needles to Victorville is surfaced.
Sacramento January 13 authorities debated a plan endorsed by the state board of charities and corrections to replace county jails with county farms to care for prisoners. The board believes the farm system is feasible and beneficial to society and inmates, while jail conditions may need improvement.
Washington January 13. A bill to extend to May 1, 1928 the time limit for Riverside county California desert land settlers to complete proof of their entries was reported out by the House public lands committee. The measure also authorizes the Interior Secretary to extend proof payments for two more years.
A telephone message to Constable Ed Pitcher asked garages to watch for Mr. Mauford, en route to Death Valley, following an auto accident that seriously injured Mrs. Mauford who was hospitalized for an operation. He drove a Maxwell car, license 482213.
Sacramento January 13. After Speaker Merriam named standing committees 95 bills and resolutions were introduced in the Assembly. One measure seeks to amend the federal constitution to provide direct statewide popular election of the President and Vice President.
The firms of White and Pratt have bought the lot on the highway west of the new Dillingham Bros. building and will immediately erect a concrete one story drug store 46 by 60 feet. Plans include a possible second story later for a hall or lodge room.
