Snodgrass Bros. prepare cattle shipment to the coast while Sam Clark resumes solo operations after dissolving his partnership. Werner installs a whim and hoist at Calico mine. Irv Garinger shows gold ore near Paradise Springs. Constable Everett treats a boy with flu, and Asher Harris plans to leave for the U.S. Navy.
Hinkley resident Hinkley W. P. Hodge bought three Duroc Jersey hogs. Mr Warner installs a new well on his alfalfa ranch. San Bernardino agent Misa Kelly visited Hinkley ladies last Friday giving a hat trimming demonstration followed by social time. Mrs E L Pitcher and Mrs Lose of Barstow attended. J C Osborn bought a Layne Bowler pump and prepares four acres for alfalfa. he already has ex acres in alfalfa. T G Phillips made a business trip to Barstow Saturday. Ore from the Gertrude-Inez Mine eleven miles northeast of Barstow in the Calico hills is rich in silver and lead. Three men work at eighty feet, with a vein twelve feet wide and two high grade veins nearby. Assays run from 50 to 200 ounces of silver per ton, average twenty ounces with two percent lead. Werner and Ford own the mine. plans include sinking to the 100 foot level, drifting, and adding a mill within months. Jack Thoma highly praises the property, predicting it may become a major Calico producer.
Mining activities flourish in the Calico district as the Mulcahy Millett Del Mar mine transfers ownership to Eichelberger and Ichus. Ichus, superintendant of Long Beach Canning, leads a forty-man crew to start work. The St Joe Lead Co enlarges its Ord Mountain force, Doc Smith returns to the district, and Mohawk mines near town show steady six-man crews.
Section 5 requires a written bill of sale for range cattle with number kind marks and brands, signed and witnessed by two freeholders. Section 6 excludes registered purebred cattle and undressed veal carcasses plus cows used for daily purposes from the act.

Two car loads of wounded soldiers from France visited Barstow on their way to Letterman hospital in San Francisco. Frank Williams of San Bernardino, a 28 Infantry Co C First Division veteran who lost an arm, led the group in presenting Captain Bradshaw with a mersham pipe. The men also gifted the Pullman conductor and porter, and many require further operations after reaching the hospital.
Bradstreets shows food prices did not rise last week with no clear gains. The report notes stalled price movement across commodity groups and little change in market costs for consumers.
Walter Alf wed Miss Gertrude Hadley in Daggett on November 16. She previously used the name Gertrude Weidenmiller but changed to Hadley after the war entry. Mrs. Alf teaches in southern state. Walter has joined the 47th F A Veterinary Corps at Camp Kearney and seeks discharge to care for aging parents.
Four Superior Valley settlers travel to Independence for final proof on their homesteads. Elmer W. Brown also files final proof with fellow travelers Mrs May F E Scheffler Elmer E Cooley and Luke Pavakovic. Miles Cook begins notice in this issue. Cook an old soldier holds a section 8 township 9 claim on a ranch with a blue house visible from the road near Daggett. Mary E Cook has a neighboring adjoining homestead with her uncle.
The University of California opens the second semester later than planned due to a renewed influenza outbreak. President Wheeler said health conditions will be reassessed and a further postponement may occur if improvements lag.

John P. Carter of Los Angeles reports that the commissioner's office in Washington informed him about a special examination for a traveling and resident auditor in the income tax unit of the internal revenue bureau. A field conference of the YWCA will be held in Los Angeles on January 10 and 11. Official delegates from the Pacific coast field including Nevada California Arizona and the Hawaiian Islands will be invited to attend.
