Porterville Elks Plans Stock Sale For Lodge Building

The State Corporation Department allows Porterville Elks Building Association to sell 700 shares at 95 dollars for 90 days and then the remaining shares at 100 dollars. Shares are to be offered only to Porterville Elks lodge members. The group aims to buy a lot and build a lodge and club rooms.

Mudgett to Manage Barstow Ice Plant and Water Works

W. W. Brison and H. N. Siegfried visited Barstow to arrange for A. L. Mudgett to take charge of the local ice plant and water works. Siegfried has become receiver for Imperial Utilities Corporation, which recently passed to creditors. Mudgett, a former long time manager, returns after years on his mother's ranch near Elizabeth Lake and this winter back in Barstow, welcomed by friends.

Alfalfa Yield Tops National Contest in 1919

The highest yield of unirrigated alfalfa in the United States in 1919 was harvested by N. W. Miller of Chino California. After drying to 12 44 percent moisture the five acre field produced 7 tons 748 pounds per acre. California won first with alfalfa, Texas second, Missouri close third.

Crooke Plants Eight Acres of Fruit Near Barstow

Crooke has finished setting out about eight acres of fruit trees at his home a mile from Barstow and has ample irrigation water. He is experimenting to see which fruit will endure the heat. He plans to plant eight more acres later.

Prospects of Increased Travel Through Barstow

A San Bernardino Sun writeup on Camp Cajon notes the Lincoln Highway will join the National Old Trails road via Arrowhead Trails and pass through Barstow. The combined transcontinental routes will boost Southern California traffic through Cajon Pass as Old Trails Highway gains paving under state plans when funds are available.

Musical program at Mrs White home delights pupils

A February Saturday afternoon concert at the home of Mrs. E L White featured piano pupils of Miss Cook. Participants included Allen Frank and Helen McDonald Eileen Moore Marie Moran Harriett Ryther Mina Conaway Evelyn Taylor Nancy Gilham Marguerite Dickerson Bernice White and Marie Werner of Daggett. Prizes were awarded for major scales with Maria Moran earning an extra prize for completing all minor scales.

Home Department Meeting for Millinery Demonstration

The Home Department of the Farm Bureau will meet at Mrs. Haws home on Tuesday March 2 at 2 pm to prepare materials for a late March millinery demonstration. Members bring lace ribbon velvet braid and any on hand items to show how second hand materials can be used to create spring and Easter hats at a small cost. Mrs. Mitchell is chairman and attendance is encouraged.

Engineer Stricken in Cab Near North St Louis

August Haefle a 37 year old engineer for the Terminal Railroad died at St. Mary's Infirmary from a brain hemorrhage after being found unconscious on the cab floor as the engine moved past its stopping point near freight cars to be switched. Fireman L H Smith noticed the engine had passed and halted the run.

Arrowhead Hotel Becomes Soldiers Convalescent Camp

United States Health Service leases the Arrowhead hotel and its properties above San Bernardino to treat about 2000 officers and men. First 350 will arrive from Palo Alto in April. The site chosen for its curative mineral waters and steam baths after a selection from 125 offered sites, aided by Congressman Kettner. Government will pay 65000 dollars annual rent with a buy option in 1 to 5 years.
