Maximo Castillo the Mexican bandit accused in the Cumbre tunnel disaster that killed ten Americans and forty one others has been captured thirty eight miles south of Hachita New Mexico by American troops. He surrendered with six followers and may face execution if extradited to rebels. the capture involved Fort Bliss and General Scott.

J N Miner of Kansas City representing the National Highway Association spoke at Barstow to urge business support for the Old Trails National Road as a national trunk highway. He opposed Shackelford’s bill for 25 million dollars for state road funds and praised the Grand Canyon Needles route, noting Needles to Barstow travel in nine hours.
