Antlers and Friends Enjoy Social Evening in Barstow

The Barstow Antlers Club hosted an Elks and family social with cards and dancing. Musicians from the Lasky Film Company provided top notch music led by Teddy Hanscon on piano and Oliver on trombone. Prizes for high scores went to Mrs. Ross and Mr. McGowan as hosts received a Christmas gift of sofa pillows and vanity items.

Waterman School District Seeks 6000 Bond Vote

A fourth grade bond election for Waterman district is set for January 4 in Barstow Grammar School to fund the auditorium. A prior $6000 bond failed to sell due to annual interest terms. this ballot clarifies the amount and semiannual interest. The district expects no opposition.

Mojave River Flood Near Barstow Draws Tourists

Heavy rains in the mountains push the Mojave River near Barstow to within four feet of a bridge turning the river into a rushing flow. Railroad section workers were posted to watch the western bridge as crowds of tourists viewed the scene. Lasky Film Company crews photographed the dramatic water rise from a small stream to a wide river.

Soldier Allen Floyd Receives Fort Kamehama Discharge

Allen Floyd son of M Marv A Floyd has been discharged from battery D 55th Artillery stationed at Fort Kamehama Honolulu. He served seven months on the island and plans to return home for the holidays. He notes many soldiers seek discharge after long service and dislike island duty. two colleagues he met at the depot had just been discharged and were heading home for holidays.

Road washout strands 100 tourists near Camp Cajon

The National Old Trail Highway washed out below the forest rangers camp at Cajon trapping about a hundred auto travelers at the camp grounds. A repair crew expects the route passable by Friday while traffic south of Victorville is detoured via Palmdale. The Muroc lake reports three feet of water and northbound travelers are advised to use alternate routes via the power line to Atolla Mojave or through Victorville Palmdale to Neenac near the Ridge Route. Barstow area roads remain intact.

Antlers Club Plans New Years Eve Masquerade Dance

The Antlers Club of Barstow has arranged a masquerade ball for New Year’s Eve at the Grammar School auditorium. A hardwood floor is being laid and prizes will honor original costumes. Cloak room, ticket sales by Haan and Miles, and decorations are set to welcome 1900s style revelers.

Landslide blocks Barstow rail traffic near Keenbrook

Southbound trains halted at Barstow Tuesday as a landslide three miles east of Keenbrook, 24 miles east of San Bernardino, blocked the line. Steam shovel crews cleared the debris by 11 am, but another slide closed the tracks again in the evening. Trains were held at San Bernardino and Barstow through Wednesday until the line reopened by 1 pm.

Salt Lake Engines Leave Track at Cajon

Salt Lake train No. 208 was delayed Tuesday night when two engines and a mail car left the tracks at Cajon while entering the switch. The engines turned over along with the mail car, but no injuries were reported. A loose air caused by heavy rains was blamed for the derailment.

Pioneer of Hinkley Passes Last Milestone

O. and Plotter, a pioneer who homesteaded in the Hinkley valley fifteen years ago, died last Friday at his cousin Sam Youngs home. He was ten years and four months old at death, born in West Virginia. His son Ralph, an engineer on the Union Pacific, arrived from Wyoming at his bedside. The body was taken to Barstow Undertaking Parlors and shipped to Denver for burial, where five daughters survive. Plotner was expert on local property values and aided the assessor in yearly district work.
