L J Henderson president calls a 3 PM Saturday December 6 meeting in the rear of his store to discuss Barstow road matters and highway contracts. Barstow Mojave road and Barstow Needles road receive funding of 170000 and 350000 from a 40 million bond issue. no mention by Highway Commission. Everyone invited.
Agent O C Moran of the Barstow office advises shippers about a ruling effective December 10 requiring shipments over 25 pounds to use wooden containers or fiber board cartons of specified strength. Packages under 25 pounds remain unaffected though ordinary paper boxes are not acceptable for 25 pound plus shipments. Food shipments by express remain unaffected and move in crates or barrels.
Mrs. Ella Pitcher, chairman of the Mojave River Valley Red Cross Chapter, has received buttons certificates and Canteen certificates for workers since the organization. Heads of committees are asked to file, at once, the hours their members contributed.
Miss Hazel Goude gave dramatic impersonations in a joint recital with Raymond Ray at Victory Theatre last Friday night. The 14 year old pianist, son of Barstow’s Congregational pastor, delivered skilled classical numbers. A note urges locals to support highway bonds and press for faster desert road improvements to connect Mojave and Hinkley Barstow routes.
The Santa Fe railroad contemplates laying three tracks on the north side of Barstow’s freight yard to ease congestion. The work will start once railroads return to private ownership, likely early next year, with the freight house moved to the south side and a new street planned from the high school to Carter’s residence. Peterson notes the current car shortage boosts used car demand and may push prices higher as manufacturers lag behind.
Barstow notes show residents traveling on official business and visiting friends in nearby cities. Flights of Italians pass through Barstow en route to New York as theater crowds enjoy the Fletcher Theater program.

Henry M Newhall died Sunday afternoon at 3 o clock in Redlands after illness. Former Santa Fe conductor known as Unete Wank by locals. He served in the Union army in the Civil War and recently reached his 60th birthday. Survived by widow, son Ralph, and daughter Mrs Lon Reedy. Burial services held in San Bernardino.
