Pigeons Vast Numbers Feed on Columbia River Acorns
In Washington along the Columbia River oak openings wild pigeons feed on last year’s acorns lying on the ground. Birds grow large from the nut diet and some are killed for the pot. Hogs make little impact on acorn crops, and deer feed on nuts as hunters anticipate fat kills this fall. An effort to use acorns to fatten turkeys is underway on one farm with hundreds of young birds to be turned into oaks. Pigeons arrive daily from islands in the river to nest.
